what the critics say

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 3/5

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 - When GRH bought Foxtrot Oscar with the aim of rolling out bistros in that name, the publicity was keen to mention that the head chef was Gemma Tuley…After all that and still only a tender 25, Gemma has suddenly popped up in Waterloo at a restaurant and bar called Arch One opposite the main entrance to the station. It looks and feels like a place for after-work drinking. When I rang to book a table — to the seeming amazement of the chap on the other end of the phone — he said I would probably want to be on the mezzanine level.

Bloomberg

Richard Vines - 3/4

Friday, October 17, 2008 - Gemma Tuley, 25, is a young chef with the kind of resume most rivals never build up in a lifetime…Ramsay identified her potential and packed her off to the three-star Guy Savoy in Paris, where she faced the twin hurdles of being the only woman and not speaking French…So much for her history. The present is more exciting for diners: She's got her own restaurant - Arch One Bar & Grill, at Waterloo Station -- where the prices are as low as you'll find in London for such quality cooking. The two-course set lunch is 8.90 pounds ($15.61). It's 12.90 pounds for three courses, with wine.

After learning that our train was delayed at Waterloo station we decided to go for a quick bite to eat and literally opposite exit five, we spotted Arch one bar and grill . As we were welcomed at the door we explained that we were in hurry and the very friendly staff promised us it was no problem at all. We were served two home-made hamburgers very quickly even though the place seemed rather busy. We were out of the restaurant in time for our train.

All in all Arch one bar and grill is a very nice place, the food is lovely, staff are very friendly and welcoming and not only does the place look amazing it has a very nice atmosphere, I recommend it to anyone travelling from Waterloo station

This place really is terrible. Reviews which made it in the press are completely outdated and standards here have slipped greatly. Ignore those completely. The menu has also been cut down considerably. Sign of a struggling venue?

Gordon Ramsay's ex chef does not work here anymore and the food is now terrible. Last I went here, I ordered lamb cutlets which were so tough i could not even cut into them. Sent back and ordered a homemade burger instead. Whilst edible, it was still lacklustre and small for the price, served on a fast-food style bun. Standards?

If the food was not bad enough, the service was even worse. Possibly the most rude service staff I have ever encountered. The attitude of the manager really was the last straw. He was extremely pugnacious and rather aggressive when I questioned the quality of the food.

All things considered I will never recommend this place to anyone for the food, unless they drastically pick up standards. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Well what can I say I have just probably had the worst rack of ribs possible very poor, the beer battered onion rings were clearly not, I would say they were out of a frozen bag, and were over cooked over priced tasteless food would not recommend to anyone, and to top it off the add a12.5% service charge to the bill

Easily the worst bar in London, and certainly the least welcoming.

A glorified waiting room for people hanging around to catch a train from Waterloo, Arch One Bar & Grill is full of baying city boys, ditzy office girls and lost souls with nowhere else to go until their train home pulls in.

Incredibly rude men in cheap suits on the door and clumsy floor staff make this noisy, cramped bar unbearable, and the sort of pub only worth visiting if you're genuinely desperate.

I hardly do not recommend this restaurant...my experiences in short:

- I literally stepped through the door from the freezing cold and tried to orientate myself when the security guy inside shouted at me "take off your hat!" - I thought I had misunderstood him and did not immediately react when he simply replied his statement in an even more unfriendly manner. (the hat was a woman's stylish winter hat and one usually takes it off WITH the coat....as coat hangers don't exist, you have to take your coat to the table and I intended on doing so with my hat as well)

- the staff was very unfriendly and service was horrible; no smiles, talking so softly that one couldn't even understand them although they were standing next to our table

(When we paid we didn't give the full OPTIONAL 12.5% service charge as we thought they had in no way deserved it - the waitress came back and said "You're XX Pounds short in the service charges"!!!)

- the room was freezing cold and apparently nothing could be done about it

--> uncomfortable, unfriendly atmosphere

three of us had a late lunch there (2.00pm). there were a few other diners but the atmosphere would have benefitted from more, but it was a bit late so can't blame them for that.

largely positive, it's good value for money, nice interior, good location, but it has the air of a place that someone has recently taken their eye off the ball.

the set lunch deals are great value, though i and one of my co-diners couldn't find a main on the set menu that lit our fires so had to go a la carte but that wasn't the end of the world.

my main of grilled swordfish was let down by being served with an apology for a salad (well a few leaves of lettuce pretty much) and a lemon slice that was obviously cut in the morning and had been left uncovered and had turned brown and dry. a small detail but just conveys a 'couldn't really care that much' attitude .

one of my companions had grilled calves liver. very generous portion but over cooked. it was served on a pretentious excuse for a plate that was what appered to be a rectangular wooden breadboard. worse still it had a large crack in the wood. why do restaurants do this?

would we go back? maybe

Had a meal at the restaurant over the weekend, the fillet steak was excellent and stacked up relatively well to the standard served at Gaucho. We had a prize voucher to use at the restaurant and what was most disappointing however was that the staff told us on arrival that we were entitled to a free starter & main or a free main & dessert, plus a bottle of wine. We were then told when the bill came that we had to pay for the food (two mains and starter) and only the wine was free. Management at this restaurant need to take a hard look at themselves and either communicate better or change the wording on their prize draws so that there is no scope for confusion when interpreting what is actually 'free'. We were quite rudely spoken to by the owner when debating what we had to end up paying for, eventually we ended up paying for one steak (which is what we expected to pay for) but he couldn't help adding the starter back onto the bill as well, quite pathetic really.
