The Independent

Terry Durack - 14/20

Sunday, November 02, 2008 - Marianna Hadjigeorgiou and Achilleas Agridiotis have knitted together an idyllic little tearoom on a sunny riverside street corner in villagey Barnes, south-west London. Walls are lined with glossy tea canisters, while a marble-topped wooden counter is laden with cake stands and glorious-looking Konditor & Cook creations under a romantic chandelier. Tucked in behind are three little rooms with white brick walls, wooden tables, kitsch tea cosies and darling little floral cups and saucers set on wooden panels as if caught mid-throw.

Went here today for an afternoon birthday tea, for which we had made a reservation for six. The food and atmosphere made for a very pleasant afternoon! Unlike other reviewers have commented, we found the staff to be very helpful. The desserts and teas were thoughtfully explained, and we were not rushed at all (we sat down at 2:30pm and left at 4:45pm without any rushing at all). The tea room is very quaint - no stuffiness at all, and located near the river. The tea selection was extensive, the scones warm, and everything else quite tasty. A big benefit of this place is the ability to make a reservation, which you can't do at many tea rooms in central London (without paying an arm and a leg). I recommend it for a nice afternoon by the river!

A charming tea shop with lots of character. Hardworking staff eager to please and delicious cakes, tea and coffee ...... all spoilt, however, by the owner, who treats her customers with disdain and is unbelievably rude to them. I wonder just how long customers will endure this serious lack of customer service before looking elsewhere for a more enjoyable experience

This is an awful place. The owners are incredibly false, create a stressful atmosphere by employing two few staff who they then castigate in front of the customers. The customers are just talked down to and ripped off through the pricing. The owners rip off everyone who steps into the shop. It's meant to be a traditional, welcoming tea shop, but is nothing more than a fast food joint for tea.

That was the very first and last time that I will visit this place. We were 'welcomed' by a woman that, basically, rudely stopped us from sitting in one of the few free tables to, actually, give her permission before we could do that. Then, we were served by another rude member of the staff that before we had actually finished our coffees she scooped them from our table. As a cherry on the cake, we were forced to leave (as other people here have indicated too) so as to accommodate a new group that had just arrived. I share the thoughts of most of the people here that this is an extremely unwelcoming place and, ironically enough, miles away from the hospitality the Greeks (as the owners) are famous for. This was by any means the most disturbing experience I 've ever had in a cafe.
