Cafe Rouge (Strand on the Green)

Finding all the other pubs and restaurants along the charming Strand on the Green packed to heaving one fine Sunday afternoon, the only place we could find a table was at Cafe Rouge. It was with a measure of trepidation we went in, this is because I have always found Cafe Rouges to be very hit and miss in the quality of their food and service. The branch in Lancer Court in High Street Kensington is pretty good, but others I have visited have been shockingly bad. Well, we were really surprised (and relieved) at how delicious our food was at this branch, and the service was cheerful and prompt. Good confit of duck with potatoes dauphinous, and the moules and frites were great, the moules really fresh and lots of them in a wonderful white wine, garlic and cream sauce. The garlic mushrooms with melted gruyere cheese to start with french bread were rather tasty as well. For the money we had a lovely afternoon, and we have been back since and it has been just as good each time. When people ask where we had dinner and our reply was Cafe Rouge it has to be said most were incredulous we actually chose to eat there, but we can vouch this branch is excellent. Not haute cuisine, but well worth a visit.
