I'm a bit surprised by the poor reviews. We visited Cafe Rouge for breakfast, and again for dinner, a few weeks ago. The breakfast was absolutely fantastic. The french toast was simply cooked, but exceptional in taste. I also ordered a smoked salmon omelette, and again, it was exceptional. The salmon was mildly smoked, and was an excellent complement for the omelette.

We ended up in the same spot for dinner. After initially being uninterested in the selection, I ended up with roast duck in a plum sauce. Again, the meal was outstanding. Of the six professionals in our group, all of the reviews were great, for breakfast and dinner. The service was good as well. I would not only visit the restaurant again, I would make it a destination if I were to return to London.

Overpriced and badly cooked.

You’d have thought that such simple dishes (goat cheese and salad for example) shouldn’t be a problem for anyone with the minimum of cooking experience.

I’m sorry for the visitors who get served such poor value.

I went on Sunday for breakfast. I don't know what I was thinking - except that I wanted an omelette. Service was uninterested and the food was slow. The omelette eventually arrived looking like it had been boiled in a bag, absolutely no colour on the outside, apart from a wan eggyness, but still cooked solid. Fluffy it wasn't. A small, lonely croissant came in a 1970's chicken and chips basket. I've had better in a supermarket. I'd asked for a couple of slices of toast too, which wasn't listed separately on the menu. They came in another basket with a couple of catering pats of butter. The toast cost £3.90.

I paid and left, a sadder and wiser man.

So all in all, go to Tescos, eat a bun on a bench instead. Even if it's raining.
