The Independent

Lisa Markwell - 11/20

Sunday, April 04, 2010 - Deborah's twice-baked goat's cheese souffle is on the meagre side, and bland. My smoked salmon, by contrast, is offputtingly enormous, served with a not-juicy-enough lemon half and some stale bread...Main courses aren't any better. Grilled pollack with cauliflower puree, savoy cabbage and bacon is at once too salty, too limp and resembles the kind of dish that fails to get a contestant through to the quarter finals of Masterchef. But it's the 28-day aged rib eye steak that's the real howler. At 24.50, we expect a plump, soft and flavoursome tranche of beef. This is greyish, tough and with an inexcusable lump of fat in its centre.

Went with friends for Sunday lunch, most of whom had egg-based dishes. Everyone happy. Someone had soggy fried fish. I ordered lamb, cooked pink as recommended in the menu. Food arrived 40 minutes after ordering. My lamb had obviously been cooked much earlier than served, possibly been re-heated. Was overcooked, bone dry and leathery. Sent it back immediately, specifically asked for it pink as recommended. Complained to manager after 20 minutes and no replacement, everyone else ready to leave. As if by magic, one minute later a new one turned up. Was raw (uncooked raw), not having been cooked on one side at all. Sauce was more like soup. Inedible. They had obviously forgotten and rushed one out, too fast. Manager was apologising so much it was embarrassing, and removed service from menu (not sure whether for messing up my lunch of the excessive delay). So paid £85 for my wife and two kids and I had a lemon chicken sandwich and latte from Pret a Manger for £4.30. Delicious.
