Nice ambience and nice waitress. Good Wine. Food was poor. Crayfish salad had no dressing and the tomatoes were rock solid and flavourless. The pasta was tough and we had to send it back and it came back just as tough. No compensation offered or gesture of goodwill, the manager was simply not interested.
Nice place to pop in for a drink.

I've eaten here on four or five occasions now. I've always been happy with the food, although I always play it safe in pubs. The quality of the meat is very good, and the portions are generous. Also, it's great to be able to have a pink of Timothy Taylor's.

The sister pubs The Abbeville, The Stonhouse and Avalon all share a warm atmosphere and are pleasant places for a drink. Unfortunately they also share food that is overpriced and average quality with little in the way of vegetarian options. Whilst the other pubs are on the whole well run, I found the staff at this pub in particular to be rude & inefficient. There are plenty of better places to eat or drink nearby and I suggest you choose one of them instead!

Popped in here for a weekend lunch and missed the character of its previous incarnation Nixons. Food was pretty standard 'gastropub' fare at restaurant prices. Surprised to hear from the waitress that the kitchen could not swap the mash that came with my girlfriend's meal for boiled potatoes (they were the same price as sides on the menu). Not too bad a place, but wouldn't rush back.

I have been to the Bolingbroke a number of times both for a drink and a meal and I have to say that my experience has been very hit and miss on the food side. The Bolingbroke seems to operate as more of a bar than a restaurant and be warned it gets very busy on Friday and Saturday nights (if you want to eat it's best to reserve a table in advance). If you want to leave it the last minute then grab one of the waitresses as soon as you arrive to get your name put on the waiting list.
The bar area does not have enough seating given the number of people who come in just for a drink or who are waiting for their table to become free and as a result it can get very crowded (but this helps add to the ambiance). The bar and waiting staff are very friendly and will always go out of their way to help you.
I have ordered a few times from the Bolingbroke and had mixed results. I have ordered the beefburger with blue cheese which was excellent and on another occasion the steak which was not (defrosted and so tough that I left most of it). The starters that I have tried (caramlised red onion and stilton tart and the duck with waldorf salad) have been very good. The wine selection is excellent. All in all a great place to go, the food is ok and the atmosphere is great.
