what the critics say

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 3/5

Thursday, August 20, 2009 - The whole grouse larded with bacon was presented on a sourdough crouton spread with liver pate accompanied by latticework crisps, cranberry sauce (redcurrant would have been better), the bechamel with bread and a rather hefty cheffy jus. It had been cooked to the right point and because it was only two days after the Glorious Twelfth had a delicate flavour. My andouillette was grilled to a nice crunchiness of skin and served with grain mustard sauce and mash...The wine list, if rather exuberantly priced, is nevertheless a splendid tome.

Monday, January 26, 2009 - The menu with the old style fonts is standard Brasserie size so you have to peer around it to talk to your dining companion but is packed with things you really want to eat. So much so in fact that you know you’re going to be able to come here time after time (income permitting) to try them all. Which is pretty much how the Parisian Brasserie of your dreams should be. Oysters? Langoustines? Crabs? I love them but today we have to try the cooking and blow me, but there are frittered frogs’ legs on the menu so one of us has to taste that while I go for smoked eel, a dish I have come to love over the last year.

A massive room that wasn't too busy. Our waiter was very friendly and chatty, but the food wasn't stand-out. Nothing wrong with my fish soup and steak, but pretty much what you could have knocked up yourself fairly quickly and the quality wasn't tip top, and didn't justify the price tag. You can eat better for less, definitely.

I made a bad judgement choosing this le Bouchon Restaurant in Spitalfield to have our first family Sunday Lunch this year.

The food, how do I put it – DISGUSTING!!! In plain English.

We had ‘dine out’ vouchers to try out this establishment. To the owner of this establishment - the reason you have promotion like this is to entice new patrons, not to treat them like second class passengers on a train or to put them off ever coming anywhere near your restaurant.

We were put on a table with paper napkins instead of some tables with proper napkins, called the servise staff to take drink orders after ten minutes having no one come near us and no service at all at the entile time we were there.

Food in the chafing dishes were all cold and tasted vile, there are two choices of deserts, one chocolate made with cheap tasted chocolate and dry sponge, the other one is YOGHURT! Since when is yoghurt a desert?

All three of us picked at the inedible food and left in a hurry vowed never to return.

Although not before we were charged 3 pound for cover charge and £6.13 service charge on a £55.13 bill. Do not understand why there is a cover charge and annoyed about the service charge for the non-existing service.

A very poor dining experience. The arrival of our food was haphazard, three of us had nearly finished our main courses before the other three meals arrived. It was not possible to wait as it would have gone cold.

A complaint about one of the main courses was met with the offer of a free salad which never arrived. When this was pointed out to the "manager" his reply was " I am aware of that"

They then had the cheek to charge 12.5% service for average food, overpriced wine and appalling service.

Even at the 50% offer this restaurant was bad value and none of us will be returning.

Sunday buffet : poor menu , almost no starters, food was far away than being called french cuisine. Food was salty , only one kind of dessert which looked liked it was bought from tesco. Would never eat there again.

The worst experience I've had at a restaurant in London.

Service, terrible. They place the wine far from you and don't fill it up when you finish. The head waiter there has a go at you, because you mention that you didn't enjoy the food. "That's the way we eat it in France" he says....

Food, disappointing, even with the 50% off deal. Steak, over cooked... Seafood soup, tasted terrible, seabass was decent but still not enough sauce, and the worst was the steak tartar.... They make it in front of you, but basically put too much seasoning and don't listen to how much you want in it. After we said that it was too much seasoning twice, they basically just repeated " that's the way we have it in France"... it tasted terrible!!!

Basically, I do not recommend it, unless you want some pretentious french terrible food and service. I really think they are making fun of us, thinking we don't know what good food is.

In the end, the head waiter had a go at us and basically refused to give any kind of service to us... That is not the standard of a restaurant they should be.

It's just a shame and they are not able to deliver, since they seem to have good quality of fresh food.

I came back disappointed and upset by the whole experience, although some of the waitresses and waiters were very friendly and the starters were nice.

Four of us popped in for a night cap after very enjoyable and reasonable tapas at meson los barilles next door. Cocktails were all excellent, if a little slow to arrive. Cheese board which we indulged in to finish our meal was outstanding and terrific value, as was the superb banyls the sommelier recommended to accompany. Fantastic end to an evening with good service and well priced. Would recommend it.

Very disappointing. Even with 50% off food it was still not worth it. There is nothing great, from service, to drinks and food. They even got our order wrong, for a restaurant charging at premium price. I will not go back, and will not recommend this to any living soul.

Very disappointing with truly awful service. We are local people and took some foodie friends who were over from NY for a long weekend - we were completely embarrassed. Food was adequate but not outstanding. Waited a very long time to be served for both food and drinks orders and then it only happened because a passing waiter noticed and yelled out to ours. Seafood platters were a good size but no effort made to explain what the platter was made up of. When asked, our waiter gave a very cursory explanation. My fillet was cooked perfectly. Timing of the food was not as requested. Water jug was not refilled at all during the evening. We were not offered desserts, cheese or coffee (I was particularly looking forward to the cheese but we finally gave up). Bill was requested but not forthcoming. Requested again and we were presented with an incorrect bill, overcharging by £80. Don't go - for those prices you can do far better.

Disappointing. Dull atmosphere. Overly expensive wine list. Very average food. Felt really let down and ripped off. A waste of an evening. So many better places within a short walk - ie Galvin, Canteen and St John Bread And Wine.

Cheese and Biscuits

Cheese and Biscuits - 5/10

Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - If first impressions were all that counted, Le Bouchon Breton wouldn't be at all bad. The room is airy and pleasant…perhaps best described as a Parisian bistro reimagined by Norman Foster, but I liked the fresh seafood counter out the front and the atmosphere was buzzy without being oppressively loud. It's populated by an impressive number of smart "French" (more of that later) waiters with a ready smile and competent manner, and after being seated and presented with those exciting menus, I was on a high. I should have left there and then.

Food Snob

Food Snob

Wednesday, November 05, 2008 - The food here pressed all the right buttons. Le Bouchon Breton really does what it says on the tin, plus more. This is possibly as authentic a brasserie as you will find in London, with a dedicated chef who knows what he is doing with traditional recipes and great ingredients. Chef Nicolas has called on the contacts he made at Le Gavroche to offer some high quality produce: beef, for instance, is a cross of Scottish Black Angus, Charolais and Limousin breeds from a single herd in Lancashire that has been hung on the bone for at least 28 days; whilst lobsters are brought from Brittany and seafood from Bristol daily.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Saturday, October 04, 2008 - DH have topped and tailed this week’s eating adventures with two new openings. Of the first, York & Albany, we expected great things...Of the other, Bouchon Breton, we expected little. It was, after all, situated amongst the dross of Spitalfields' new chain restaurant dining quarter and is the sister restaurant to Bouchon Bordelais in Battersea, an area of London where you are more likely to find Lord Lucan than a decent meal.
