Friday, October 02, 2009 - I had deep-fried mozzarella with anchovies and Pachino tomatoes. This was totally delicious, but I think would have gone down better, as a high-class experience, if it didn't so incredibly strongly resemble a toasted cheese sandwich... triumphed in my second course, with the warm veal with tuna-fish sauce and sweet-and-sour vegetables. That 'sweet and sour' referred to a sweet pickle, and the veg - teeny baby turnips and carrots - were eye-poppingly tangy and lovely. The meat was as smooth as velvet and - because it is true, not because I'm trying to tease out a theme - the tuna sauce glistened like silk.

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - Foodwise, Avista can hold its own among the best of the nouveau Italian pretenders. Take bigoli, for instance, fat, pleasingly worm-like, hand-rolled pasta with a fleshily addictive texture, dressed with a mulch of anchovy, pine nuts and spring onions that gives the robust blandness a vivid, palate-tingling punch. Or delicate, pale orange pumpkin gnocchi anointed with butter, crisp-fried sage leaves and nuggets of scamorza (smoked mozzarella). The excellence of both these dishes belies their apparent simplicity: it takes real ability to do stuff like this.

Very disappointed with the food. The starters were OK, but the mains were definitely not as we expected. I had the duck which was very bland, and not served with anything at all, not even a sauce, which meant that a salad had to be ordered at extra cost, my husband had the sea bass which was very small, he needed to order potatoes, again an extra charge. The cheese board was impressive, however my plum tart was not at all!! All in all a not very satisfying experience.

Went for dinner at Avista with a travelzoo deal. started off very well with a mixeed starter that we shared, vennison carpaccio, endive salad and salmon. very lovely and fresh. unfortunately it went downhill from there - the veal main was bland, the fish whilst perfectly cooked did lack something. for dessert i had berries which were hard and unripe with a tasteless yogurt mousse. Boyfriend had quite a nice tiramisu. The decor is lovely and the service fantastic but i wont go back
