Tuesday, November 04, 2008 - Bumpkin number two has installed itself in a quiet spot at the South Kensington end of Old Brompton Road, there to reel in a slightly Sloanier flavour of West Londoner, which it was doing very well when we visited on a Thursday night...Essentially it’s a gastropub minus the pub bit, though you can order a glass of Bumpkin’s very own ale, brewed by Shepherd’s Neame. The dining room’s pretty big, but there’s a softly cosy atmosphere, an exceptionally well-spoken hubbub and first-rate pies to get stuck into.

Agree wih most of the other reviews. Recently had dinner there and the service was very poor, the food was average with a high price tag. I don't mind paying a lot for high quality food but this was neither. The portions were comically small and it was the first time I complained at a restaurant in years.

I wouldn't go again.

Over-priced, even for this part of London. You're paying restaurant prices for pub food and service and not even top-drawer pub food at that. Throw in mistakes with drinks orders and despite a reasonably buzzy atmosphere I'll give it a swerve in future.

Nice atmosphere, but very overpriced mains for the quality and amount of food served. The service was ok, but no follow-up on my comment that the fish I ordered was supposed to be grilled and it was pan fried. My husband had a warm pigeon salad, which was not fully deboned. Although we ate 3 courses, he was still hungry at the end of the meal (and he is a moderate eater). We won't be going back.

Went as part of a group on the £35 (exc. drinks and service) summer private dining menu.

The place its self is nicely decorated but lacks character and soul, obviously part of a wider chain.

Service was unbelievably slow, nearly an hour late serving the starters.

Lots of bread followed by bite-size starters...to share! Was not even enough for everyone to sample each item.

Chicken and fish main dishes were tasteless, steak OK but equally uninspiring served with chips and peppercorn gravy.

Pudding bites were tasty but similarly small. A pot of chocolate mouse between 7 people...WTF

Overall a complete rip off for dull food and microscopic portions which thanks to the painfully slow service the meal took over 3 hours to complete.

You have been warned...

We were only two people. The restaurant was NOT full. Service was very bad. We did not receive any orders after an hour. We had to leave. I do not recommend this restaurant.

Went to celebrate birthday large party, service unimpressed, food less impressive, atmosphere was ok but very noisy. One of the party ordered ham hock and pickles and ate a quails egg thinking it was silverskin onion. Roast dinners came with cold yorkshire puddings. Children's dishes served in scorching bowls. One small bowl of vegetables to share between 10. No bread offered. Dried bread came with pickles and person asked for butter 3 times and never came. To sum up will not go again! Very expensive not worth the money

Having just moved to the area we ate here on Monday on reccomendation of a friend. Was surprised to arrive to a very quiet restaurant at 7.30pm when Bumpkin had been so highly reccomended as a good local bite. Friendly service (our waiter was very sweet), great food and more importantly what a change in atmosphere - come 9.15pm the place was packed to the rafters and simply buzzing.

Good food, great waiter and right on our doorstep. Bumpkin - we and our friends will be back!

Just had a wonderful Sunday lunch here - the food was delicious and reasonably priced and the drinks list is excellent (though the bloody mary's are strong!) However, what disturbed me was that I saw the manager yell at staff TWICE visibly, loudly and entirely in appropriately -- all in front of the customers. The first time he was telling off a bus boy for not setting a table of four perfectly - less than arm's length away from me. Then I saw him yelling at our waiter, holding onto the guy's arm and waving a finger in his face quite angrily in front of full view of a the crowded restaurant. That waiter had been nothing but friendly and attentive to us. I just can't stand to see staff treated so poorly by the management and for that reason I'm not sure I can go back to the SK Bumpkin.

I had heard a lot about this restaurant and was looking forward to trying it out when I recently went tthere for a birthday dinner.

For starter I chose a potted garlic mushroom dish which was definitely the highlight of the meal. It was extremely tasty and great for sharing.

Unfortunately the main courses did not live up to the strong start, or indeed the price tag. The menu is disappointingly bland and sticks to basic chicken breast, pork, lamb chop and steak dishes. Considering the restaurant seems to be selling itself as a little bit of the country in London, I would have liked to have seen some more adventurous options on the menu. There was no pheasant, venison or game of any type. There was also a lack of real british classics- I would have been delighted to see options such as calves liver, steak and kidney pudding or even good quality sausages and mash.

Considering the lack of options we all opted for the sirloin steak at £20. The steaks were extremely thin and the meat was below average quality. They were served with some reasonable chips and a thick bernaise sauce, but again everything was very uninspiring.

In Bumpkin's defence the drinks menu is extremely good, service is friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic, but it is overpriced for the quality of the food. It would make a reasonable family restaurant if it were cheaper but I shall not be returning.

I booked the private room upstairs for my 40th and had one of their Banquet Menus. The room was wonderful with plenty of space for everyone. The food was excellent and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Our waitress for the day was fantastic and made sure we were very well looked after.

Could not recommend Bumpkin highly enough and already two of my friends have been back for dinner downstairs.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - The other thing they aspire to around these here parts is a nice little place in the country and if they can’t have that then what better than to bring the countryside to SW7. Hence, Bumpkin the new sister restaurant to Bumpkin in Notting Hill. And true to their word (“For city folk who like a little country living…”) they theme up the place to the max, even down to playing Country & Western music. Country. Geddit?
