Friday, December 05, 2008 - It's nice to be able to wax lyrical about a proper 'pub with grub', because they're few and far between these days - often lost in the sea of fussy gastro-bars with daunting menus and designer furniture. The Stag just has a team of great staff serving up honest food at reasonable prices and that's really all you need from your local.

Food is good and reasonably priced, staff very nice and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. It's our local!

My only complaint is that this pub puts my locals to shame!

The burgers are great; the cheese selection is excellent; cocktails are good and staff are lovely. The garden will be a big hit in warmer weather with its cosy covered booths and nooks. The highlight of my visit was the white chocolate bread and butter pudding - almost indecently good.

Looking forward to going back soon. This is a real gem.

We moved down to Belsize Park from Hampstead recently and despite four years living just up the hill had never ventured past South End green to the Stag until giving it a crack for Sunday lunch this weekend. This was obviously a mistake, as our reward for striking out to pastures new was a cracking roast in relaxed surroundings (i.e free of screaming rat children, though apparently they are allowed), a decent wine list and attentive, polite and accomodating staff. I am particularly fussy about my roast and this was hard to fault - a robust portion of medium rare beef, crunchy roasties and good selection of veggies. Gravy was average but I have to give them some room for improvement. Rest of the menu is, unusually for the area, packed with straighforward dishes you actually want to eat rather than being overly pretentious and fussy. Prices were reasonable especially considering the location. Will definitely be back.

Sunday, September 21, 2008 - Is The Stag really in Hampstead as they claim? I am pretty sure that Fleet Road is one of those that people who live there think is Hampstead and tell people is Hampstead but is really Belsize Park. No matter, if I am not sure where The Stag is, I am pretty sure what it is. It is the new pub from Jonathan and Andrew Perritt the brothers behind the popular Regent in Kensal Green. I also know that, on what is probably going to be the last sunny weekend of the year, it was actually rather a pleasant place to have Sunday lunch.
