what the critics say

Wednesday, April 08, 2009 - The prawn was butterflied and huge and about as tasty as they come at this size, but I could have taken more punch from the mustard. The bream knocked it out of the park. It was smothered in a thick mint, coriander and green-chilli masala paste and had maintained a lovely, moist, singular flavour inside it all…It’s true that some bits were better than others, and, ergo, it cannot all have been perfect. But I remember thinking, 'This is it. Easy and exciting, but sophisticated and eye-opening – this is what eating out should be like.’

Giles Coren - 6/10

Saturday, January 03, 2009 - We took the menu’s advice and ended up with pretty much everything on the menu at a cost of £160 for solid matter alone, which is a fair whack for a posh curry, even in Marylebone. All four pakoras, at £33, was a very good start: light, crispy, sparklingly spiced proteins with the zap and fizz of Cantonese or Japanese food. Fresh parallelograms of Isle of Wight plaice, deep-fried with “coastal spices” and served with cool, crushed pea and mint was all the good bits of fish and chips without the pointless stodge.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant with some of the best service in London. I went to Trishna with visions of it being a substitute for the Trishna in Bombay. It is not! It has its only special charm and the food is absolutely exquisite...the flavours, the presentation, the choice of dishes on the menu...all so well thought out and executed. We had the koliwada tasting menu...I would totally recommend the duck sheekh kebab and the crab.

We were served by Chris and Shaffi who I must say were courteous and friendly and extremely hospitable and made the whole experience even more worthwhile.

Would definitely go back again and recommend to all.

We visited Trishna on Monday 23rd November for a 10 year reunion.

We had the private dining room and sampled the innovative 3 courses for £25 menu, which allowed you to have 3 items from the menu + rice and bread – incredible value! It also included a glass of prosecco and a dessert (although most of us didn't have room!)

The rest of the restaurant was very busy (on a monday night!!) – so book early to avoid disappointment.

The menu had 3 sections, starters, mains and vegetarian dishes – we could pick 3 from any section – thus meaning if we wanted 3 mains, we could have done! This menu was EXCELLENT value!

I had the lamp chops (additional supplement of £1 per piece, totally worth it! I had 2)

Seafood biryani and paneer. It was so tasty – flavoursome and really different to ordinary indian food found in the UK.

This is probably because this restaurant takes it flavours from India as opposed to Bangladesh, the origins of many UK curry houses.

The private dining room was classy and elegant – grey slated tiles surrounded the beautiful rectangle table capable of holding up to 10 diners. We could see the wine cekllar and were given our own private waiter for the evening too.

Staff were friendly from start to finish. We were not rushed and our food was served in a prompt and timely manner so that we could enjoy our evening and focus on catching up over fab food.

I also heard that Frieda Pinto came to this restaurant TWICE in 5 days when she visited the UK as she loved the food so much!

Definitely recommend this restaurant to all!

My wife and I had been wanting to try this for a long time, as my wife has great memories of the original Trishna in Mumbai. We had gone through the menu beforehand and were pretty certain we would try the tasting menu. I opted to go for the wine match as well.

The food, for the most part, was exquisite. The shrip was fresh and flavourful with a kick to it but the heat was not overwhelming. The tiger prawn was very delicate and moist, and cooked to perfection. Then came the sea bream, which was out of this world. So simple yet so delicious. Next in line were the mussels, but since neither of us are big fans, we asked if we could exchange the mussles for the squid, and they were very accomodating. That was followed by lamb chops, possibly the best I've had in London. The main of lamb curry was the only disappointment of the evening, and we ended with a mango rice pudding, which, once again was lovely.

The wine pairings on the other hand weren't that great, and the experience just reinforced my belief that it is extremely difficult to match indian food with wine. The best pairings turned out to be the riesling with the bream, and the spanish red with the lamb chops, but the others were less inspiring.

One thing we were worried about was portions. It seems like Indian places in London don't quite get the concept of smaller portions for tasting menus, but Trishna got it just right. Some might complain that portions are small, but in my opinion, that is the way it should be on a tasting menu, otherwise we wouldn't be able to get through the second half of the meal.

Service, while cordial, was slow. They didn't seem to have enough waiters for the amount of covers, and the hostess had no idea about the food.

Finally, at £32.50 per person for the tasting menu, I'd definitely recommend it, and will probably be back there before too long.

Trishna was fantastic. Visited a couple of times (lunch&dinner) with friends and partner and have never been dissapointed with food, wine and service. Very friendly and attentive staff. The biriyani was gorgeous! All in all a very enjoyable meal. Highly recommmended especially for lunch time as they have a great value set menu.

My boyfriend and I adore Trishna. If you like seafood, this is definitely one of the best options in London. A bit on the pricey side but always an enjoyable and tasty experience. Staff has always been friendly to us without being too pushy. Recommend the Kowliada tasting menu which is very good value, particularly with wine. Not to miss are the tiger prawns, lamb chops, haryali bream, seafood biryani, and saag.

I've been to Trishna three times now. In my most recent visit, both my partner and I had the tasting menu. We enjoyed trying the various dishes however they really did leave far too much time between courses than was necessary. And so we ended up spending over three hours having dinner.

The food was great, I would highly recommend the lamb curry as well as the tiger prawns and lamb chops.

The whole experience was a little dragged out though. I also agree with some other reviewers on the tediousness of not giving diners the food menus until long after consulting the drinks menu. We didnt have cocktails and instead ordered a very nice bottle of wine without having to pay too much.

Overall, I like this restaurant, but I get the impression that the management and staff believe this place is alot more high calibre than it really is.

I AM INDIAN AND THIS IS NOT INDIAN FOOD!!!

After disappointing starters, the mains were so bad that i refused to pay for the masala fish that came out floating in its very own oil pond, DISGUSTING!!

The manager didnt even have the courtesy to come over and inquire why we were unhappy with our food, instead he sent over his head waiter to come over and argue that i should have complained about the fish as soon as it arrived at the table, i obviously told him the fish shouldn't have made it out of the kitchen let alone to my table, you can also remove the service charge from my bill too. As we got up to leave, the manager saw us walking towards his direction on our way out, he very rudely turned his back to us and started speaking to the head waiter.

Will definitely not be returning!!

An American In London

An American In London

Friday, July 02, 2010 - Crunchy, spicy prawns were addictive and something that every bar in London should have on its menu, and Hariyali bream with a coriander marinade was light and refreshing. Fish curry was so good we ordered two of them, and the lamb curry had a delicate coconut scent that reminded me of Malaysian curries. I felt transported to some breezy, tropical town in South India. 3 quid per bowl of rice was a bit steep, but otherwise, no complaints this time around about the price. The four of us ate a large amount of flavorsome, light-tasting food for just 32 a person, excluding wine.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 5.5/10

Sunday, March 15, 2009 - We settled on the ‘Koliwada’ tasting menu with eight courses, seemingly a good option for variety and pricing. The menu was crafted in a way to suggest inventive Indian-inspired cooking, but on delivery the food disappointed in both their small portion sizes and lacklustre presentation. The quality of the cooking hardly fared better. The diver-caught scallops seared with green chilli and garlic, and the squid spiced with rice flour, lime zest and chilli salt were under-seasoned, leaving me reaching for the salt, something I am not normally prone to do.

Dos Hermanos

Thursday, November 06, 2008 - So, when HP told me he had a booking for Trishna, a new transplant from Mumbai, I had my doubts. Budget and time restraints precluded me visiting the original branch on my travels through India, but my research showed me that, while the room is considered shabby, Trishna is well known for its seafood dishes and in particular its butter, pepper and garlic king crabs. Well, it’s London sibling is a much smarter operation and the small tables in the dining area were filled to overflowing with plates and a variety of wine glasses that reflected the offer of wine pairings with each dish.
