what the critics say

The Independent

Terry Durack - 16/20

Sunday, April 19, 2009 - The food promises to be lighter and simpler than at the Club, with more flexible options for snacking and sharing. A comp starter gets my interest immediately, with its moreish crisp shell of semolina encasing spiced potato, a play on the street snack gol guppas… The power and subtlety of traditional spicing gives Cinnamon Kitchen an anchor to the past that lets it incorporate some intelligent deconstruction and innovation without losing the plot. It means the food here is as Indian as it is modern, something I had never been convinced was possible.

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 7/10

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - I loved the interior – spacious, exotic, macho and classy, very carefully arranged but much too big to feel precious or oppressive… My roast lamb saddle, with mint-onion sauce and pilau rice (£18), was exquisite, a perfect pale pink, spiced subtly so that the meat’s young flavour was in plain evidence, nevertheless more exciting and varied than a straight roast… I will persist in loving the Cinnamon concept – dishes and combinations of flavours already much loved, twisted into greater and greater sophistication.

My husband and I went there a couple of weeks ago and had the sample canape menu. Of the 14 dishes on the menu virtually every single one was exceptionally good. The chef, Abdul Yaseen, came to talk to us, and asked whether we had any questions. I have a wheat intolerance, but usually I just avoid the things with wheat. However, the chef said he would either substitute the items with wheat or make them without. I also don't eat red meat, and again, he said he would substitute those dishes which had red meat. I don't think I've ever had such a caring. accommodating service. Fantastic meal, a very personal service, and overall a wonderful experience!

I was really very disappointed by this restaurant, particularly given the ridiculous prices. I'd gone there for a date, and first of all found the lighting a bit glaring. The main was a little bland and tasteless, while the naan bread and chutneys a complete rip-off. It was impossible to enjoy a leisurely meal as staff kept whipping away plates and glasses as soon as they were set down- often before we'd finished! Very much had the feeling of being on a conveyor belt, with no sense of timing, and was almost expecting to see someone queuing up for our table. On the other hand the dessert was interesting. Quite frankly I'd recommend a chain restaurant such as Café Rouge over this- you'd get better service, better atmosphere, and a better value for money.

Also, I know it's in the city but do they really need huge signs in the loos informing me that I'm being monitored by CCTV? No, I'm not going to start snorting cocaine off the sink, and yet another way of making me feel uncomfortable rather than a valued customer.

Overpriced and underspiced.

The price level seems to have been set with the expectation that the bill would be picked up on expenses. £6 for a pint of Peroni (pro rata)? Why?

When the rest of the culinary world is moving towards small shared plates - the tapas/curry format. Why does CK think it a good move to force diners into a single plate for their main course?

Good for CK for trying something different from a conventional curry house - unfortunately its just not fun. The quality is not in line with the price level.

Have just got back from a beautiful Indian meal. As a starter I had the rabbit terrine, my husband the king prawn-both delicious. The pollack as main course was gorgeous and my husband said the lamb was cooked very well with spicy flavours that enhanced the meat which was not fatty at all. He had the kulfi ice cream which I tasted and would have ordered but was too full after the previous courses. What I loved was the delicate flavourings that came through the food. A little surprise of chilli, occasionally, was pleasant and added depth to the meal. I will never be able to eat another Indian again without thinking of CK. The appetizer of a potato fritter was so lovely I could have eaten more but then would have struggled with the rest! You get the traditional Indian flavours without the heavy sauces.

The bar is worth a visit on its own. Try a chilli caipirinha for a chilli kick or kir royale with kick. They have the biggest blackberries I have ever seen.

The staff were attentive and not in the least stuffy which a lot of other restaurants could learn from.

Don't expect your takeaway prices because this is not take away quality.

Food wasnt too good, bit disappointing, you got very little for your money, service was not great either, then 12.5% is added. Think I would go there for drinks and a snack rather than eat.

Last time i went cinnamon kitchen (over a year ago) the experience was fantastic! Very expensive but worth the money. I think we got threw 4 baskets of assorted naan breads! (each basket was £5 from what i remember)

Portions are slightly small but was good as after we were off out and it didnt weigh us down. I recommend the resturant for special occasions. (Day to day is too expensive ) I would classify it was indian food.

Overall worth a visit!!!

A wonderful restaurant! The service is very attentive without being oppressive; our waiter very helpful when it came to choosing a selection of dishes from the menu. Any restaurant bodes well when the service staff are knowledgable about the dishes. I had the Welsh lamb kebabs as a starter; be warned they are not as tasty as the usual Indian kebab houses but still succulent and create a gentle heat on your tongue. The main dish was the rajastani deer which was delicious. The waiters somehow worked out that it was my birthday; my friend gave her word that she did not inform them of this. When ordering dessert the waiters presented me with a complimentary slice of pistachio cake with a lit candle and decorated plate. A really lovely touch! Will definitely revisit!

I was here this weekend and have to say what a lovely restaurant it is. I agree on arrival I was a little concerned due to the 'shopping centre' nature of the building but I was blown away with the food. For a Saturday evening the place is bug enough to keep it buizzy but still have a peaceful dinner. I can't wait to go back - a great spot for couples / families / dates / meetings.

We dined at this restaurant after reading all the good reviews and we were very disappointed. The food is over priced and this restaurant cannot claim to be indian cuisine!!

Here are a could of reasons why I would not recommend Cinnamon Kitchen:

Waiting staff - Slow and unattentive - The waiting staff were so desperate to turn around the tables quickly, the waiter didnt even take our drinks order before the food, when we finally did place our drinks order they took 20 minutes to arrive plus they forgot 3 drink for which we had to wait another 10 mins!!

Food - The food is mediocre, the portions are served per person which is ridiculous for an indian restaurant. The whole concept of indian cusine and indian dining is sharing!! In addition, by the time the food came out it was cold so we had to send 4 dishes back!!! The bread selection was burnt and you are charged for the chutney - which is usually complimentary at 99% of other indian restaurants in the city. The flavour do not go well, they serve chinese style pork ribs with Masala mash?!?!!?!?

In addition, if you are thinking about going here for a celebration then think again - they charge you 'cakeage' if you wish to bring in a cake!!!

Overall - I dont have the energy to write anymore on how bad our experience was at this restaurant but if you are looking for a decent indian meal then this certainly isnt the place. If you like to look good and flash the cash then by all means go ahead!!!

It has to be said I was suspicious of here but it was fabulous. In an amazing setting where you can view the Gherkin from the covered outdoor seating area. The interior was beautifully designed and allowed for a wonderful birthday party. The staff were increadible friendly and helpful. The food was amazing just the way I experienced Indian cuisine in India and not in a curry house here! I would recommend this to everyone and already a friend has gone back.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Monday, November 17, 2008 - It’s an awkward space where even when full and buzzing you’d still not feel completely comfortable in. The service too was still finding its feet, being a bit overenthusiastic about the upselling and not completely clued up about Indian food. Everyone was friendly enough though (as they should be to somebody looking to spend money). Not that the food wasn’t good. Overseen by exec chef Vivek Singh it was mostly tasty gear, prepared with a light touch. Only problem was it was all just a bit polite and didn’t have that sense of generosity that you’d want or expect with Subcontinental food.
