The London Paper

Feargus O'Sullivan

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 - Flash comes from the team behind Bethnal Green’s Bistrotheque, who also opened London’s first pop-up restaurant, The Reindeer, two¬ Christmases ago. But Flash is a whole lot slicker, and arguably less buzzy…more sedate, and doesn’t have such a strong sense of cultural crossover. Diners are a more West London-ish crowd and few seemed interested in looking around the galleries, which were all but empty. Flash still charms, but I missed a little of the rawness that gave its guerrilla forerunner its spark. That said, Flash is a damn fine place to eat.

Service was slow and messy to start but did improve; it was almost like our server wasn't on shift yet or they hadn't set up for dinner quite yet. My wife's crab starter was beautiful, with good balance that let the flavour of the crab really come through. She wasn't impressed with the cote de boef for £29; it was cooked perfectly but the cut is a bit of hard work. I had the steak tartare to start with, and it was good example. The seasoning was just right, it was saucy with the egg mixed in, and it had the texture of being minced finely by hand. My vegetarian main of polenta was probably my favourite, with all the flavours of mushroom, cheese, and chestnut playing around nicely. The lemon parfait and the fig custard puds were also wonderful. Worth going for the food, not just the concept.

The overall experience was disappointing. The food was tasty but at £29 for the beef main, it was the least to be expected. The starters menu was very light on the ground after I was told my first two options were unavailable. The waiter completely forgot to bring the bottle of wine until reminded twice, and the waitress who presented us with the bill couldn't bring herself to at least smile. Overrated and overpriced.

Loved the place, and especially the teapot!! I went in a party of six, we all chose different starters, main courses and puddings, and not one disappointed. Delicious ceviche (which is so often watery) guinea fowl the best ever and I finished with the fig and raspberry pudding. We all tasted eachothers, and agreed that it was a memorable dinner . Congratulations to the Flash team, and especially the chef. We all vowed to revisit before closing time!

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Sunday, January 18, 2009 - The surroundings were wonderfully eclectic and the plates used were adorable! I was quite tempted to get myself a teapot but the price tag at the accompanying shop definitely put me off. If you’re interested, it looks like they’re selling off all the fixings when the restaurant closes, dishes included. Overall, the food was very good and would tempt me to Bistrotheque. Hopefully the portion sizes will be a little bigger though…
