what the critics say

Andy Lynes - 4/5

Tuesday, April 21, 2009 - The USDA prime rib-eye fills my plate with meat and heart with joy. The charcoal-scented aroma (they cook their meat here in a fancy-pants Josper barbecue oven from Spain) is intoxicating and my scary-looking Tramontina steak knife cuts through the tender flesh as though it were butter. A New York strip, or sirloin, is a closer-textured piece of meat but equally delectable… 'So what don't we like about Goodman?' I ask as we head back to the Tube. The silence speaks volumes.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - I invited Atherton along to try Goodman for the first time and see what he made of the opposition…I waited for him to criticize Goodman. And waited. Finally, I asked him what he made of it. “It’s good that more steak restaurants are coming to London, and they’ve got the real steak- house look right here,” he said, gazing around the room with its plain wooden tables and wooden floor. It’s fantastic, and I really like that a lot of the meat is served on the bone,” he said. “I like it. It’s very good.”

Totally totally delicious! The best steak I've had in London by a long way, and the service was equally as good.

I had the New York Strip Sirloin, which was good to perfection. I abandoned the Stilton sauce, not because there was anything wrong with it, but because the steak tasted so amazing on it's own. My dining partner had the 600g T Bone which was equally as delicious...is it wrong to pick up a bone and chew off every last morsel of meat?!

The accompanying sides were great, green beans with shallots and tomato and onion salad. No need for chips although I'm sure they meet every expectation too.

Goodman's is a restaurant for those who really love steak and would pay for it. It's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but there is no reason you couldnt share a large steak between two along with a few sides and drinks, and end up with a reasonable bill. A must go for anyone who wants to eat the best.

Excellent all round. Certainly one of the best steaks I have eaten outside of South America.

I have been in search of the perfect steak for about the past year. I have dined at many restaurants in the capital, claiming they sell the perfect and best steaks.

Goodman is by a very very very BIG margin, the BEST steak restaurant in London.

The service is excellent, the restaurant warm with superb decor and atmosphere.

Tthe steaks. Steaks at Goodman are of an impeccable standard and quality. The meat is well marbled, soft and bursting with flavour.

I am so impressed with Goodman, I only wish Michelin recognised its efforts and quality and awarded them a star.

Very nice restaurant! Was able to book a table online very easily. That's something I really appreciate during a hectic work day.

When I got there I was warmly greeted then shown to my table.

Beef carpaccio starter was very nice, flavours were spot on, with a decent amount of acidity in the dressing.

I went for the Goodman ribeye - medium rare. It was cooked to perfection and tasted beautiful. Rather pricey though. I got a great sized serving of chips and veg with it - nothing to fault here either. In other restaurants they are very stingey with the sides.

For dessert I got the apple tart. I found the apple and the pastry rather on the thin side - would've like it to have been a bit thicker with some texture. But it was served with gorgeous vanilla ice cream which made up for it a little.

Overall, it was a great experience, with nice friendly staff, and more importantly the food was great.

My second visit to Goodman's and although there was nothing wrong with my first visit this time was far better in almost every way.

Lobster bisque was good and my Caesar salad was the best version of this simple salad i've had for a very long time. My friends filet was a good size and cooked well and my new york strip was full of flavour and great value at £18 including my salad to start, decent chips and a very good peppercorn sauce. (This was part of the lunch set menu, a la carte prices are a lot more)

Wine list has a nice selection but could do with more options by the glass. We had a nice bottle of Chateau Batailley 2004, but at just over £70 a little overpriced, but as I have said so many times before, normal for London.

Service was good and all the staff were friendly and knew their menu.

Overall very good, far better than any of the Gaucho chain, a little ahead of Maze grill but a touch behind Hawksmoor as far as the steaks go.

I must have been a bit unlucky as most other reviewers seem fantastically impressed with this place.

I went for a USDA T Bone, which was pretty tender, if a little light on flavour, but OK. Maybe the Scotch would have been a better choice. My big concern was that I asked for it rare and it came out medium, even by British standards. Given the prices, all the trumpeting around their drying room and the fact that so many people rate it as the best steakhouse in Britain I'd have hoped that they could actually cook the things to order. But apparently not. Hopefully it was a one off, but I'd not give them a second shot as if you're shelling out £150 for a two course dinner for two, on a Monday night, you have to expect them to be able to get their speciality dish right every time.

On recommendation from a friend I took a good another good friend of mine for dinner. I have lived in London for a 8 years and worked in hospitality, I have also set up my own restaurants and pubs. This is my new fav restaurant in the UK. I am a huge fan of good service and would always comment when received and of course the same goes for bad service. The service here was in a word superb, not over the top, not in your face, not rushed or hurried and not uneducated. The food was simple amazing, steaks are to die for and blew away anything I or my friend had, had in the past. The wine (sure you can guess) was perfect, a NZ pinot noir @ £45.

I know I know im raving about this place but I have missed good service for so long in London and this restored my faith that with simple training and good people anything is possible. Keeping it simple, high quality produce and good location, great people. I winner in my book, go (just in case it changes!). I even debated not telling anyone and keeping is under my hat, but i guess thats just not cricket!

Oh and £145 for 2 (so 40 -50) per head plus wine. Not cheap but it is with out question worth every penny. ENJOY!

Top restaurant for steaks in london, really the best now and finding it hard for anyone to come close, even Hawksmoor has a way to go.

Top waiter, quite beardy, but thats what i want from a steak house. Hands on manager...lovely touch. Food 10/10.

If you can get a table. Do it!!

This is a wonderful restaurant. Steaks are superb and cooked to perfection and the waiter was very helpful and professional in explaining the different cuts and flavours. Excellent wine list, great bar for a pre-dinner drink, decent prices. Will definitely go again soon!

Will Eat For Money

Will Eat For Money

Thursday, March 25, 2010 - The burger was an unbridled joy, and halfway through I mumbled that the 50% of brioche bun and loosely packed, juicy meat sandwich I had just eaten was probably the best example of the genre I'd ever consumed. My dining partner, who had advanced in his eating, wiped down his nectar-drenched forearms and claimed that, without wanting to reveal anything, the other half was just as good. The 'rabbit food' (lettuce, tomato and red onion) were fresh and crunchy, working well with the luscious meat. Condiments included ketchup, mayonnaise and strong English mustard, sensibly served on the side.

Essex Eating

Essex Eating

Tuesday, March 09, 2010 - Goodman is a meat lover's paradise, huge slabs of top-notch steak available in seemingly limitless sizes, with the attendant potential of eye watering prices for the truly greedy...the plates arriving at the table certainly looked the part. Fabulous shiny buns (ooer) containing thick, juicy burgers. I'd ordered mine with cheddar cheese and fried onions, which were oozing out from underneath the bun in a rather satisfying manner. I was smitten. Sides of fat chips and Bearnaise were also deposited on the table (I love, love, love Bearnaise - far too much than is good for me).

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Friday, December 04, 2009 - I secretly wanted to love the British beef but when it came to flavour, the USDA won hands down for me. I should also add that we devoured every single side too, as well as a multitude of sauces (a red wine and stilton jus, mushroom, a fiery peppercorn and a smooth bearnaise), all of a high quality...Goodman is a great steakhouse. The food was excellent, as was the service, and that USDA beef really was their trump card.
