Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, August 05, 2009 - At their recent new branch in Fulham, the cooking is, if anything, even better. The menu isn't as long as some of the other tapas titans, but I could happily eat everything on it, from simple straw potatoes with peppery, garlicky 'mojo rojo' sauce, to confit of suckling pig with vanilla apple puree. Everything we order is good, if perhaps just a shade less magnificent than at current fave rave Iberica. Arroz negro (black rice) lacks a bit of depth. Otherwise, terrific: a great puck of 'broken' duck egg, potatoes and chorizo; whisper-light calamari; a salty, chilled manzanilla sherry.

Terry Durack - 14/20

Sunday, March 15, 2009 - The idea of a new all-Spanish tapas bar in Fulham is appealing. Lola Rojo is as cute as a button, with explosions of bright red, like flashes of a bullfighter's cape on staff aprons, vibrant paintings and stools on the outdoor terrace…Lola Rojo is a happy update for Spanish food in this country, with its simple, modern, unpredictable approach, and sympathetic prices. It's a little bit crazy – the whole place fills with smoke at one point, and what with the "glove artichokes" and "smocked anchovies" Lola's speling cood be impruved – but that's all part of its all-female, all-Spanish charm.

Went here last night with a couple of friends. A decent venue, with good decor and space between tables - and a big winner is the large foldback doors that run the width of the restaurant. The food: clearly they are going for the nouveau cuisine tapas style. e.g. patatas bravas were 5 potatoes, chopped so that they would stand upright, with a (very weak) sauce on top of each. The presentation was excellent for all the dishes, but I found the taste slightly disappointing: all a little too oily, greasy and creamy for my taste. My friends were slightly more positive, but no-one was fighting to finish the dishes and no-one wanted more. Price was ok (£27 each for 6 shared tapas and 2 bottles of wine), service pretty poor (but it looked like it was her first day). Won't be going back.

Went there on Sunday evening (6.30 pm) with friends (4 adults, 4 kids) for a quick early dinner. Food was very average The tapas was good, but the paella with sausages was not very tasty. But what really put us off the restaurant was the terrible and unfriendly service. Initially we were the only customers- but still kept getting annoying looks from staff because the children would occasionally get up from their seats and walk about (we were the only guests!!). Towards the end of our meal 2 other couples came. We were then told by one of the waitresses that the other customers were annoyed by the level of noise the children were making!! It was only 7.15 p.m. and the children were actually not being loud at all and most importantly were not walking about. After settling the bill of nearly £150, we left the restaurant and will definitely never return again.

not sure why the other reviewer has such a downer on the place, my girlfriend and i had a really good meal here! you can't expect tapas in fulham to taste like it would in spain but the stuff they serve here is tasty and pretty good value. the classics (patatas bravas, croquetas, etc) are all done well and the calamari with lemon mayo were delicious, really light and crispy. we had a few so-so dishes but overall couldn't complain and would certainly go back for more.
