what the critics say

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 6/10

Monday, April 20, 2009 - The restaurant is brilliantly situated beneath modish offices and above a concert hall; the bar’s packed, and even the sleek, pointy modernism of the interior can’t puncture the fun….There was absolutely nothing offensive about any of it – just a minor mistake on many of the plates that made you want to roll your sleeves up and go backstage.

TimeOut

TimeOut - 3/6

Thursday, November 20, 2008 - The food operation is run by new company Green & Fortune which boasts its own farm as well as combined years of experience in Searcy-catered venues such as St Pancras International, the National Portrait Gallery and Royal Opera House. Our visit was in the early days of opening when just a few artistic types slunk at the tables. Staff seemed green but keen: they’ll be under much more pressure once The Guardian and The Observer staff move into the building.

Truly awful experience. Expensive with limited choice for both food and wine. The main course of one of our party was lukewarm; needless to say it was sent back - only for the same dish to be re-heated and appear late. There were apologies but not well handled.

I have visited the Rotunda many times - after concerts, with my family at the weekend or just for drinks at the bar with friends. It's got a great atmosphere, it's in a lovely setting and the food is generally excellent. The staff are busy but I've always found the service very good, the waiters are polite and helpful and always ready to recommend and advise. If you want good British food, well prepared, in a buzzy setting , you couldn't find anywhere better. Watch it on the terrace though - my salad blew into the canal!

What can I say, this is my first one star review. My partner and myself walked past this place a couple of weeks before we went and said to each other that looks like a really nice place. It's true it dose look like a really nice place and when you walk in you think wow. A very nice location overlooking the canal and to be honest the food was amazing. Five stars to the chefs, but that's where the pleasantries end. When we walked in not a single staff member greeted us and we stood waiting for some time. After a staff member had seen us waiting we asked for a table for two and after some time we were seated. We were offered water and then our menus were brought to us. Our order was taken and our meals came out very quickly. At no point during the meal were we approached to ask if we were happy with our meals, or even asked if we would like a drink, after we had finished our meals it took them almost 15 minutes to clear our table and we still weren't asked how our meals were or even asked if we would like to see the dessert menu. We did feel like dessert and a coffee after our meal but by the time someone came over with dessert menus we were well and truly over the customer service and just wanted to leave. The staff member who took my payment just stood there in silence as the transaction cleared then handed me the receipt and walked away. Never in a dining experience have a ever been made to feel so uncomfortable, it really did feel like they didn't want us there. The lack in customer service was such a disappointment because the two of us both really enjoyed our meals. I would recommended giving this place a miss.

Visited this restaurant yesterday for lunch. I can only reiterate the customer complaints from 2009 - so , nothing has changed in all that time! The food was very good although not good value for money but the service was appalling. From being served bread by a waitress who dropped it on the table (no tablecloth) and put it back in the bread basket at a jaunty angle (this is important!) to the manager whose attitude beggars belief, this was a complete disaster on the customer service front. We were the only ones in the restaurant section for the whole of our meal but we were utterly neglected for the duration. Not once did anyone come and ask if we were enjoying the meal. Twice we had to ask the waiter over for more water and bread (when it did come the jauntily placed peice of bread was still in the basket!) and it was left to us to pour our own wine. We also had to call him over to order coffee.

When we asked the manager to take off the 12.5% sevice charge on the bill he just said okay and didn't seem bothered to ask if were dissatisfied in any way. He was sloppily dressed - no tie - and slouched over the counter at the bar. The waiter's shoes were filthy, the staff coat cupboard was in the eating area.... I could go on, but you get the idea. Don't bother.

Poorly cooked food, small portions, expensive for what it is and dreadful service / poorly trained staff knocking into each other, clueless about taking orders, clearing plates, hanging coats - confusion reigns here. Beetroot, goat cheese salad -practically scrappings; ham salad (30p worth of M&S ham would be more satisfying!), luke warm fish pie with very little fish (2 bits of salmon and 1 prawn), snitzel dry and leathery.

On previous visit, similarly poor service but absolutely delicious roast pork and wonderful salt beef salad. Thought they prided themselves on quality ingredients simply cooked. Sad that this place is going wrong so spectacularly.

I work in Kings Place - this should if they did their job be my favourite place. I can forgive anywhere once, but we now have 3 occasions separated by at least a month each to complain about the Rotunda. All the bad experience revolve about the same type of problem, so this is what happened today.

Location - superb. Staff - rude. Prices - rip off (for what you get)

Today - being in real need of food (missed breakfast, and dinner last night was a bit nouvelle).

Entered Rotunda, no queue (great) - I saw a large board offering fish, chip and peas for £12.20 - I was hungry - so asked the barman for the same. He responded with you get that in the restaurant, what would you like to drink? I ordered my drink, expecting it to be transferred onto the food tab. No that was not possible - I had to pay separately, which I did. The barman said go and sit in the restaurant, which I did.... and sat for at least 5 minutes at the smallest table (there was only 1 of me). After the said 5 minutes I was asked why I was sitting there “the table is reserved" (no sign on the table), and loads of other tables that were empty. I was told, "I could sit at the bar". When I had asked earlier to sit at the bar, I was told to sit at the restaurant.

Do I want to pay with the drink over £15 for fish and chips? Be ordered from one bit of the restaurant to the other? and the food probably comes out of a freezer anyway. No - I walked out.

Despite working in the building, I will NOT BE RETURNING. There are loads of places in the neighbourhood that are friendly, give service and treat customers as customers - not as an inconvenience.

What can I say other than DREADFUL!!

We visited Rotunda last week to celebrate my sister getting her masters degree and from start to finish the entire meal was a disaster. We were about the only people in the restaurant (apart from three or four small tables) and yet we waited nearly an hour for our food. When it did arrive, most of it was luke warm and not in the least bit memorable.

The manager was quite hopeless and leant on the back of my seat whilst talking to us, all done in a very relaxed and uncaring manner. The majority of the waiting staff wafted around the restaurant like they didn't care. The only saving grace was the girl that waited on us was utterly charming and sympathetic.

All I can say is don't waste your money, there are far better restaurants in this area.

Sunday, March 15, 2009 - The Rotunda Bar and Restaurant is situated in Kings Place, a newish all singing and dancing arts/conference centre near King's Cross. I came here because I managed to stumble upon its brunch menu… Based on today’s lunch, this is a wonderful place; what with spring and summer coming I can’t currently think of a better place than the Rotunda to dine al fresco.
