Thursday, October 23, 2008 - Good dim sum can result in diners waxing lyrical about the restaurant responsible for days. And in the Chinese community, word of mouth travels quickly. Within weeks of Yum Cha opening, local families and savvy Chinese students had laid claim to the tables at prime dim sum time (12-2pm), despite the restaurant's less-than-shiny-and-new facade. (Inside, it’s a different story, with handsome wood detailing and a golden Buddha statue reclining in the centre of the room.)

Having moved from South to North London for a short while, first aim was to find a dim sum place. Yum Cha is pretty unassuming with the "usual" uninterested staff but turns out some excellent dim sum.

Prawn and chive and prawn and scallop dumplings with their tacky, translucent skins were fabulous. I've had better xiao long bao (shanghai dumplings) at Pearl Liang and Leong's Legends but these were still perfectly acceptable. Roast pork cheung fun was good - although I find it's pretty hard to mess this one up! A portion of broccoli in garlic sauce was very tasty but was maybe a little miserly.

Will definitely be back - especially with the carrot of 50% off on Mon-Weds dangling in front of me.

We had a lovely dim sum supper here recently. There are very few places in North London that serve great dim sum and while the dishes here weren't the best we've had, they were all fresh, delicious and a step above the stuff they serve at chains like Ping Pong, Dim T, etc. Prawn and scallop dumplings were delicately steamed and very tasty, and we loved the fiery Szechuan pork dumplings topped with crushed peanuts, garlic and chilli oil. Service was good throughout, though a little slow to bring the bill. We will definitely return at lunchtime when the dim sum menu is more extensive to try their cheung fun and pork buns.

A very good experience.

The food, service and atmosphere where excellent.

Value for money was also fist rate but I have only been on Mon/Tue/Wed when the Dim Sum is all half price. At full price I would say it was a little pricey, especially for Camden.

I have been a few times now and will be returning.

After reading some reviews I ordered some crispy duck and it was really not good, I felt very dissapointed. I asked for half a crispy duck the duck was all shreaded and tasted not quite good.

Would not recommend, expensive for bad food.

Brilliant dim sum at this Singaporean restaurant.

As a Chinatown regular i love dim sum, but have never tasted anything as light, authentic and well cooked in Soho.

This is set to become a local for me - I might even get round to trying out the set noodle and rice dishes one day.

My wife is a great cynic about food (being French), but she swooned over what we were served.

I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Much better than I've found in most places in London. I visit family in hong kong frequently and this stacks up well.

Excellent salt and pepper squid and good value to boot

Staff are efficient and service is quick.

Dim sum is just as good as the more expensive restaurants, and it's a bargain since it gives you 25% discount on the dim sum menu from mon - fri. Particularly liked the singapore laksa and baby octopus. Helpful waiter but had a few things that we ordered that did not come. Recommend it for cheap and good dim sum experience, nice decor too.

Monday, January 25, 2010 - The charsiu puffs form one fifth of the benchmark dishes which help me decide whether to love or hate a dim sum restaurant. The pastry was a little papery but the juicy honey sweet charsiu filling more than made up for any deficiencies...The har gaw was prawny and oily - good, while the siu mai tasted very meatbally, above average. On the other hand, the crystal scallop and prawn dumplings had rich seafood flavours and were brilliant. The slippery pan-fried turnip cakes were simply a joy to eat, it carried the signature charred starchy saltiness which makes this dish so interesting.

Tuesday, July 28, 2009 - Wave after wave of Dim Sum arrived. First to take on the brave souls were squid of chilli and garlic and the Wu Kok. The smooth yam encasing a succulent combination of pork and vegetables whilst the squid were crispy but yielding, containing plenty of flavour from the garlic and chilli. As we entered deeper into the meal, we were faced with our first tower of steamed goodness. Char Siu Pau were sweet, savoury and soft all at the same time, whilst lotus leaf rice moist, if unassuming...

Thursday, June 18, 2009 - As in most dim sum restaurants, there is a paper menu that also doubles up as a method of ordering. You put a number beside the dish you want signifying how many portions of that dish you desire then hand in the menu to any waiter that happens to catch your eye...Overall, the food was pretty average. Some dishes like the Shanghainese dumplings and pork buns were good, but almost everything else had some problems. While it's not actually bad, there are better places to eat.
