what the critics say

The Independent

Amol Rajan - 6/10

Sunday, January 30, 2011 - The food is unexceptional and inconsistent, but the interior gives a lovely light, and the ambience comes easily...Tommy's Welsh shank of lamb really has been slow-cooked for 24 hours, judging by the ease with which it comes off the bone. The sweet redcurrant sauce in which it sits is an able companion, but the absurdly unadventurous sauteed vegetables on his plate are an affront to the French imagination. I have the slow-cooked British pork belly, which is slightly overdone. But it is the focus of a really thoughtful plate - confit apple, pommes puree, a red wine and truffle sauce and, best of all, a boudin antillais.

Guardian

Jay Rayner

Sunday, November 28, 2010 - The food is not earth shattering, but it has a reliable Gallic heft which is reassuring. On the menu cauliflower soup is first referred to as Creme du Barry - Comtesse du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, was obsessed by cauliflower - and the dishes are rich with the likes of duck confit, chicken livers and sauces mounted with enough cream to put a herd of Friesians on overtime...Best of all was a very good cote de boeuf, served with truly crunchy chips and a Bearnaise sauce we watched Oliver make. Desserts were not a strong point, but at least there was a list of cheaply priced good wines.

Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec is probably one of the best restaurants to go to. This is my thrid visit at the brasserie. We were always welcomed with open arms. I am new to the area and proud that I made the right move. The brasserie holds this unique french charm, maybe its the food, the service, the live music or the french speaking waitresses. Whatever it is the combination of all these made the experience warm unlike many contemporary restaurant where you feel unwelcomed.

I had tried a few dishes already so far the cote de boeuf for 2 was wonderfully cooked to perfection. The lamb was my partners favourite dish as it was cooked for 24 hours. I sometimes wonder how it becomes so tender. I have to admit although all of the dishes I tried looked and tasted delicious, I find the menu somewhat limited in fish options. As for dessert the choc fondant is to die for with white chocolate ice cream.

Every evening there is live jazz music in the wine bar on the 1st floor, this is great for me and my wife to enjoy a night out with a hearty meal after a hard days work. The smoking terrace is another bonus as well are the victorian style toilets. Our next visit might be in the private dining room where there is no hire fee apparently.

We arrived on a Sunday lunchtime and the place empty, which turned out to be difficult to understand. I had a lovely creamy scrambled egg with salmon and toasted muffin (we were only after a quick lunch as we had another appointment to attend), and my partner had the toulouse sausages with a gorgeous pomme puree.

We both loved the food, loved the quality of the decor, cutlery etc.

We came back later for a glass of wine and to listen to the jazz band playing upstairs in the wine bar. Excellent three piece band, but again we were the only ones there.

This restaurant/bar needs your support London!
