what the critics say

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 2/5

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - A mixed platter of chicken and beef skewers were beautifully chargrilled, the spicy peanut dipping sauce had real complexity of flavour and just the right amount of chilli heat. Roti canai was a warm, buttery and flaky delight…So far, so wildly inconsistent. But there had to be a reason why the small dining room with its closely set blond wood tables and chairs was packed with mostly Asian customers. It probably wasn't the service, which was an odd mixture of brusque efficiency and annoying haplessness.

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 3/5

Wednesday, April 01, 2009 - We wanted to start by sharing a Singaporean chilli crab offered at the notably reasonable price of £11.80 and found it impossible to resist fried wantons and roti canai, a flatbread served with curry sauce…The crab was great if characteristically difficult to grapple with, and the Hainanese chicken rice as elegant a balance of flavours and textures as it should be. Beef rendang was not in the same league. There are no frills in the décor and service can be brusque but what Rasa Sayang does, it does very well.

went for a friend's birthday party many months ago. the food is okay. not superb but okay. i dont think any of the meat was halal during my visit. Service again, quite rude, kinda reminds me of CnR few steps away. No smile. Not friendly but there must one, and only one who is nice. Asked us to leave despite ordering plenty of food for the birthday. Customers always right maa. Buck up aaa boys and girls.

I keep on going to Rasa Sayang for the food, it is the best Malaysian I've found in London, although everytime I go I have had medium to bad service. However after this weekend, I probably will not go back until I forget again how truly bad the service is.

This weekend I was there with a couple of friends at about 4:30pm on Saturday, the restaurant was emptying out post lunch. We had to wait a while for our order, which we didn't mind too much as they were cleaning up after everyone leaving, and we were just having a nice chat.

My friends had already eaten but I was hungry, so they ordered drinks and I ordered a dish and a drink. After taking our menus away, the waitress came back and told us it was a minimum of £6 per person. I could see why this would be during busy hours, but the upstairs was relatively empty and it would still be a few hours until anybody would come in for dinner. I pointed this out to the waitress and she didn't say anything, went away and came back with the menus!

We left.

I am totally agreed with those bad reviews. To be honest, the food was acceptable but this was the WORST, RUDE, IMPOLITE service I had ever seen. I don't understand why I should spend money eating in a restaurant while all the staffs are shouting at me and did not respect me as a customer!!!!

Although I always think as a Malaysian, I should support Malaysia's food and Malaysian restaurant but I swear I wouldn't return to this restaurant anymore

I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to any of my friends or I should say will do my best to STOP all my friends going.

RUDE SERVICE. I have been to Rasa Sayang before and although the food was quite enjoyable, we had to put up with a long wait of almost half an hour in a queue, while the staff seated other customers who walked in off the street almost immediately (who seemed to be favoured regulars). Once we were finally seated we sat waiting for an hour for the dishes to arrive while again other tables who were seated after us were served their food in good time.

But I did enjoy the food, especially the prawns in sambal with rice. So despite my better judgement I went back, hoping the shambolic service of the first visit was a one off. However this time, after the usual waiting, instead of being given one of the three free tables for 2 upstairs, we were led downstairs and had to wait while a staff member rearranged a table set up for 6 by dragging off the end section and then pushing it right up against the wall in the far corner with the low ceiling. We decided to forget it and started walking out, when the waitress suddenly decided that the upstairs tables were free after all. We were pretty insulted so didn't take them up on their offer.

It seems that there is a blatant double standard going on here, with the regular customers being given good tables and service while everyone else is treated as an inconvenience. As much as I liked the food, it wasn't enough that I would put up with this kind of shabby treatment so I won't be going back.

The food is really nice but the service is horrible. I will miss the food in RASA SAYANG, but had to think twice before I visit again because the servers are really rude. I used to recommend to my friends who looking for Malaysian food, they are satisfied with the food but not the service. They not even want to leave the tips because the service are horrible. They are wondering why the workers behave rude all the time.

I recently went to Rasa Sayang restaurant and I must say, as a Malaysian, the food is EXACTLY as you would find it in Malaysia.

I don't know who has been doing the reviews for this restaurant but they clearly do not know what they are talking about! The Char Kuay Teow I had was authentic and the Satay Ayam were equally of high quality. The best foods in Malaysia come from hawker stalls and to which note, Rasa Sayang's food quality is of the same level. Perhaps these so-called "food critics" are simply used to westernised Malaysian food?!

As the portion sizes were generous, it justified the amount they charge for the dishes in the restaurant. I would highly reccomend this restaurant to everyone.

Had a decent meal here, not amazing, but certainly good. The Beef Rendang was quite tender, I have had more tender but this was not bad, with nicely complex spicing with a decent chilli kick. The veg curry was very liquid, and had very soft vegetables, that might be perfectly authentic for all I know but it didn't do much for me, it also was less hot than the rendang so didn't warrant its 2 chilli menu rating and needed more of a kick, the broth was also a bit simple, prawn sambal was ok I think, but prawns were massively overcooked so I didn't really eat enough to know, roti cannai was good, with delicious flakey roti and plenty of lentil curry. Portions were massive, for £30 for two we were stuffed and left plenty of food, would probably have fed three. Service was fine, friendly, smiley, no problems, restaurant is a bit cramped but what do you expect at these prices? There is probably better Malay food in London, but for location and value this is a good option.

The food here is fine, but the portion is so small. But then, the workers are HORRIBLE. They do not know how to work and serve people, they are so rude when they talk to people. They do not seem to understand English as well, but they still wanna pretend, it is funny to see people in this way. I am very disappointed when they cant even answer people properly. I was JUST asking:" Can I use this voucher from the newspaper? " They told me:" Sorry, U can only use it before u take down the order" I am very surprised as there is no such RULE saying this. Oh ya, they do not serve tap water, which is actually against the rules and regulations in the UK. I am wasting my time to write this because I am very annoyed by them.

Cheap Eats In London

Cheap Eats In London

Thursday, July 16, 2009 - My alarm bells started ringing when my curry came out within 3 minutes of my order being taken. 'Ok what do you expect?' I thought to myself. 'It doesn't take long to ladle out a bowl of steaming hot curry'. I talk to myself a lot by the way. But damn they couldn't even heat up my curry correctly. The sauce temperature was hot whereas my chicken on the bone was lukewarm. And dry. My partner's Singapore noodles fared slightly better. The noodles were a bit bland and could've done with some heat but the prawns were fat, juicy and plentiful...Did I get them on a bad order, or a bad day? I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and I will return as they do have loyal customers who stand vehemently by Rasa Sayang's reputation.

World Foodie Guide - 7.5/10

Friday, July 10, 2009 - There are two floors, the ground floor where there is more hustle and bustle (otherwise known as atmosphere) and the basement, which is quieter...Black pepper crab was the star dish of the meal. There was a choice of this or spicy crab and came wok-fried in a rich dark sauce. It was very fresh and worth the forty or so minutes we spent picking the flesh out of every crevice and leg using our fingers, pick and cracker. Not a 'date' dish, but one to enjoy with relish with a good friend!

Tamarind and Thyme

Tamarind and Thyme

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 - First up was this beef rendang and rice. For a one dish meal, this was a very generous portion (and this can be said for almost all of their dishes!) of very tender and nicely spiced beef rendang, a very dry and thick curry…I also wanted a vegetable and I chose the kangkong with chili and belacan. This was cooked perfectly, with the stems still having a bit of a crunch…Along with a few drinks, the total bill was a very surprising and very reasonable £40. And boy, were we stuffed…
