TimeOut

TimeOut - 3/6

Thursday, February 19, 2009 - Low-lit lamps, candles and shimmering chandeliers mellow the dark, decadent decor of the main bar while, upstairs, the cosy knob is cranked-up even further courtesy of a small bar and sofas. The drinks include better than average beers and eleven well-chosen, finance-friendly wines by the glass with bottles ranging from £13 to £17. With the food, they’ve turned up the gas on ‘gastro’; stuffed chicken leg wrapped in bacon with parmesan mash and Madeira sauce, cod and cockles cassoulet, tuna steak and bok choi. Credit lunchers can also graze on nuts and olives.

Went to The Pembroke for our office Christmas lunch last Wednesday-the first time I'd been to this establishment. I have to say, I was not impressed.

The goats cheese and beetroot tart had 4 very small pieces of goats cheese on it, the Angus steak was at best luke warm upon its arrival, and the portions of cheese were so small they barely lasted 2 mouthfulls. If the place was heaving, I could sort of accept it, but it was by no means very busy, so there is no excuse really for sub standard fare.

One particular waitress plonked each dish down with a thump and although we were charged for food ordered by persons that sadly had to cancel at the last moment, the food didn't appear. I understand from my fellow diners that they rated it average at best, and in my opinion, not value for money.

I shall not be going again.

The Pembroke's service sucks! So I was all excited about eating at the Pembroke based on my hotel recommendation of good English food. 1st off, the dining area was full. I can understand that if you are good food and popular. Then the server said I could order at the bar upstairs. I was super excited. These 3 girls were ordering just in front of me, and the bartender took like 20 mins to take their order and give them their drinks, etc. I was starving and I wanted to order rib eye too and a Guinness. I barely found a seat for one. Bartender was asking the girls where they were going to sit, and they said they didn't know, so he said, oh take that table and chair which was reserved wtih my scarf. So now this guy took 20 mins, offered my saved seat to these 3 girls, and barely knew how to take one of the girls special request order. But I waited patiently for 20 mins, because I wanted good English food so bad. Then when I was finally up to order, he said he couldn't take my order, the kitchen just said don't take any more food orders because they are overloaded. REALLY? I waited patiently 20 mins, and was starving. I was so upset, I was rude, and pushed a few people out of my way out the door after taking my scarf from the table I was reserving for myself. I can't tell you about the food as I never got to try it. But based on the demand of the full dining table, and the bar orders, and I'm getting refused service because of it, the food must be good. But make RESERVATIONS or go off peak hours because that was pretty much the worst service I got for food. And I was starving. Also it's very loud so not sure how the dining area is, but you will have to use elevated voices. It's a pub...what do you expect.
