what the critics say

The Independent

John Walsh - 7/15

Saturday, July 04, 2009 - Il Baretto is in the heart of Marylebone restaurant-land. The upstairs bar is tiny and cute. Downstairs, the welcome from the staff is pure theatre, as the maitre d' and waiters vie with each other to welcome and seat you...It's actually an old-fashioned trattoria, serving OK-but-dull food, but gesticulating wildly that it's something far more special. Keeping It Simple is all very well. Sometimes, though, it comes across as Not Trying Hard Enough.

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 7/10

Friday, July 03, 2009 - I had the veal paillard. Again I thought the value was good, almost the most expensive thing on the menu. And it was lovely: pounded to supermodel proportions, seasoned perfectly, thrown flamboyantly on to the grill. It was everything that first distinguished and elevated Italian cooking, after we'd spent all those years slavering over French...A perfectly nice, mainly excellent value, genuine, delicious Italian restaurant, in the throbbing epicentre of London, where you'd most expect to be ripped off. OK, so not all of it made me want to stand up and cheer, but some of it did.

4 of us on a Saturday night October 2009. The restaurant was full with a friendly bunch, one diner even sent a glass of Prosecco to all the diners.

The food was first class and very authentically Italian, but £8.50 or was it £9, for a summer minestrone is a record. The Fiorentino beefsteak for two was really tasty aged meat If you eat pasta or pizza, you can get out for £35 a head, if you want something more, £60 per head is more likely.

Staff were numerous, friendly and helpful, but you could get forgotten, particularly when you wanted the bill.

My husband and I went to this place in September 2009, and had a horrible experience.

The waiter was very rude, and the food was mediocre, and quite overpriced for what it was. The waiter started with an attitude, and had to come back to verify what we'd ordered, as he'd apparently forgotten it.

I love italian food, My husband's pasta clearly wasn't fresh, contrary to what the menu claimed.

Avoid at all costs!!!

Food was terrible. Anyone can cook better.

Service was less so - particularly when I was told off by the waiter for eating only half of my main course and interrogated as to why I had left so much. The restaurant was also dead.

I would most definitely not go back.

i very much enjoyed the character of Il Baretto - very friendly staff make you feel like you're the one they were waiting for - offering you wines to try and making excellent recommendations.

good place to take someone for a business lunch when you don't want to be seen to be making too much of a fuss.

i had a spagetti with lobster which was a cracker.
