Saturday, May 30, 2009 - With a pint of draught Kingfisher nicely freezing my hand, the menu at Hason Raja looked reassuring. So did the room, a standard Indian restaurant of the late 80s with lots of light ersatz wood about and waiters in dinky uniforms. I asked one what he would recommend as a main course, ‘oh the chicken tikka masala!’ he said, quick as a flash. I searched his features for signs of irony, but he seemed completely serious…This is an Indian that plays by old skool rules with mostly Bangladeshi dishes and it does the job well. Not fine dining but fill you up food with a subtlety that marks it out from more suburban ‘Indians’.

One of London's top modern Indian restaurants. Owner and industry veteran Rafu Maih as pulled out all the stops to attract the acclaimed chef Prasun Saha from Mumbai's famous Taj Hotel. The result is an inspired new menu with some rare and unique dishes.

For starers there's a the lightly spice Abadi King Prawn with tartar sauce.

For mains try the Dumka Lobster with a delicate sauce of mace, cumin and saffron, Goose KiKi Parchi in anised and poppy seed blueberry sauce, or Roasted Duck Breast with anis and saffron.

Also recommended is Shathkora Mangsho signature diish of diced lamb shank cooked with wild mushrooms.

Excellent is a word that can describe the food, service and atmosphere. I have been to the restaurant tonight for my 1st wedding anniversary and appreciate that they friendly welcomed me and my wife.

The speed of service was good and staff was very cooperative. The food was bit expensive as compared to other restaurants around otherwise everything was superb.

I would definitely recommend the place to everyone.

I went to Hason Raja on a Friday evening with four friends. We had booked, which was just as well as it was fairly busy when we got there, and found ourselves in pleasant surroundings with a friendly welcome.

The restaurant offers an interesting and varied menu (including a good selection of fish and seafood), so we chose three of the starter selection plates with our poppadoms, and a variety of meat dishes, naans, rice and sides for our main course. There wasn't a particular dish which stood out - it was all excellent. None of the dishes was overly rich, or greasy or salty, as you sometimes find with curries, and we left feeling that we had plenty to eat but were not stuffed!

You do pay a little bit above your average London curry house prices but the quality of the food and relaxed atmosphere made it worthwhile.

The one slight niggle we had was that when we asked any of the waiters for assistance, they would usually insist on summoning the waiter who had greeted us (possibly the maitre d' or head waiter) rather than dealing with it themselves, which meant we sometimes had to wait a couple of minutes to ask him. I'm not sure if this was because they did not speak good English, as some reviews have indicated.

But this was the only slight complaint we had about what was an excellent meal. I would not hesitate to go there again.

Popped in for a buffet lunch during one of my long distance walks across the city and it was one of the best buffet lunches I've ever eaten and the best time to visit the restaurant as you can eat as much as you like for only a measly £9.95 including a drink and service charge of course but it's below the mighty £15 so that's not so bad.

Hason Raja will be experiencing more of my custom for buffet lunches in the unforseeable future I dare say.

da waiters do understnd hindi as most bengali pple do, and it does serve indian food as bangladeshis eat the same food as indians, also nearly all 'indian' takeaways and restaurants are owned by bangladeshis. good customer service, lovely food, reasonably priced i will defo go back

Good food but very annoying service. Pushed us into eating far more than we needed. Made us feel uncomfortable and then had the annoying habit of including service charge in the bill and then offering the credit card machine for a tip. Not cheap for what you get. Won't go back. Shame

I went here on a 50% off offer and hadn't read any reveiws before hand so was surprised to come here and see such bad reviews. I found service to be very good, let us change the time when we were late. The food was delicious and unique and I am going back this week!
