The Telegraph (at the Earl Of Derby)

A great little pub tucked away in the back streets of New Cross. I'd recommend it for their great ales (three on tap), the reasonably priced down to earth pub food, the warm and welcoming decor and relaxed atmosphere. Our newly discovered and much loved local.

Since the previous reviews, The Telegraph has had a change of management and has turned from a perfectly acceptable pub into an absolute gem.
John and Leila keep their beers perfectly, were born to run a great local and turn out fantastically tasty food, served in massive portions. Last Sunday, the roast was pork with a creamy green peppercorn sauce, which went down an absolute treat with the sort of perfect roast spuds most places never seem to manage. My wife had the pork belly, which was such a huge chunk of meat, I had to do the decent thing and finish it off when she was too full to take another bite.
I mean it as an absolute compliment to The Telegraph that I would not describe it as a gastropub (with all the wishful thinking and dashed hopes that frequently implies) but as a pub which serves brilliant food and well-kept ales. John and Leila are charm personified and it is a testament to them and the way they run this pub that I write this not just as a customer but as their friend. Too many places these days clearly regard everyone coming through the door only as pennies in the till but here they have turned the place around to become a proper local; somewhere you feel as comfortable as though you were in your own home.
Have to agree with the previous comment about the pews, however. It would be a fine thing if the Telegraph's owners would replace them with something more comfortable in which to settle with a meal, pint and the papers.

I dined at The Telegraph Tuesday gone, and was pleasantly surprised by the refurbished building, good selection of drinks and good, home-cooked food.
The ales were very well kept, I tried two out of four; Chiswick and Preservation. Not bad prices to boot.
I visited with an old friend, and we both had the burgers, which were top notch, more something one would expect to find in a possibly more upmarket esablishment. No pre-packed frozen food here, which is good to know when more and more places are opting for the easy way out.
I have only one criticism of The Telegraph; the pews (although attractive) were not at all comfortable, something we both agreed on.
Service was very friendly and strong, we'll be back.

I ate at the Earl of Derby, renamed Telegraph Hill at teh Earl of Derby, last Sunday, 12th April, with my partner and our two friends. The experience: fantastic!
The last time I visited the Earl, Telegraph Hill sorry, was around four years ago, and at the time would not have returned. Now, for sure!
Me and the other guy both had the Sunday Roast, and both tried the Beef, which was cooked perfectly and served with a plentiful helping of the usual suspects, but with a twist. The leek was served in a sauce I couldn't quite place, which turned out to be nothing oher than mustard, but giving it a kick and now something I'll be trying out myself at home.
My girlfriend had the Asparagus Risotto, which I trie a bit of and was pleasantly surprised. I have to admit, it didn't look great, but it could have easily have been from an Italian restaurant - obviously a tried and tested recipe, and one that works.
The other girl had the Fish Pie, and although I didn't try it myself, she was more than happy and even complimentary to the waitress - a rareity for her (if you're reading - sorry, Sam!).
Overall an excellent dining experience, in a real Oasis of a gastro pub, in an area that has been lacking of the sort for some time.
Also, for us smokers, an excellent smoking area. Cheers!

Supporting local business and trying out somewhere nice to eat/drink in the nearby area are two good reasons for trying new places, however the leg of duck with 'three bean casserole' unfortunately turned out to be an extrememly dried out piece of meat (that wasn't all edible) along with half a tin of kidney beans (clearly straight from the can) along with french fries (for some reason) that were pretty tasteless and also dry. It was probably one of the worst dishes I have ever seen/eaten and at nearly ten pounds it wasn't value for money either! Hopefully the drinks will be enough to keep the venue alive as the food won't!

I dined at this newly-opened gastropub recently and was very impressed. The menu caters for a range of palates and purses - from pan-fried calves liver to sanwiches served with crispy salad and chips; the service was friendly and efficient; the roaring, real fire was just wonderful and there was a good range of beers and wines. Prices very reasonable. I'll be back.
