Yoshino

Went to bite to eat prior to night out as it was close to where we were going. Would go again! Food was great - for 2 we ordered a tempura set meal, plus couple of small dishes and this left us feeling full but not stuffed. Tempura was amazing. Tried 3 of the 'desserts' which were interesting - the black bean panacotta our favourite.

Service very good.

Bill came to £45 including tip and with 1 beer and 1 coke - good value for central London.

Also loved the fact that there was no music and the upstairs space felt light and airy.

We had a lovely weekend lunch here after it was recommended to us - we would never have found it otherwise. It's tucked away from the chaos of Piccadilly Circus and was refreshingly quiet and calm. We ate upstairs in a minimalist cafe-style room, but you can also eat downstairs at the sushi bar.

The food was great - tasty, unpretentious Japanese classics. Prawn tempura was excellent. Sweet, sizeable, succulent prawns in a crisp, greaseless batter. Vegetable tempura was less exciting - battered edamame and green beans. Chicken katsu curry was a generous plateful, including some sweet glazed carrots, pickled veg and sesame beans, and didn't taste synthetic or overly sweet as it sometimes can. Everything we ordered was hot, fresh and flavoursome. Don't expect a Roka-style menu - this is simple, everyday Japanese fare.

Service was sweet and attentive throughout and the bill came to £35, including a seemingly bottomless flask of sake. Excellent value for that area. Ideal if you're looking for somewhere to actually have a conversation, as there was no piped-in music. A lovely hidden gem we will certainly return to.

Fantastic! A great mix of sashimi, sushi and tempura - all served quickly and with a smile. Small restaurant but plenty of room around table. Home made Apple Juice superb. We ordered one set meal and then topped up with small bits we thought we might like, Worked well and plenty for two. Tuna Carpaccio deserves special mention.

P.S. Had eaten the night before at posh restaurant in Connaught Hotel - Yoshino was better and cost roughly one tenth!

I am only familiar with Yoshino's take-away counter on Shaftesbury Avenue.

It's definitely the best place to get very reasonlably priced sushi in the westend. It's great if you want to grab some lunch or have a picnic nearby.

I am a fan of the rolls. Tuna mayo and crab being my favourite. They used to do really amazing smoked salmon rolls but I don't like the taste of the new organic salmon they use. It tastes too strong. The set sushi trays are great value too with a variety of different sushi. I wish they did more sashiimi though as I am trying to cut down on rice.

Staff are always friendly and helpful and you get served quite quick.
