Its a colombian chef, everybody else seems to enjoy the food, and the place is very welcoming and has a great atmosphere!

I would have to agree with the general theme of mediocrity that runs through most of these reviews. Myself and a few friends turned up on a saturday, admitedly at about quarter to ten, firstly the staff seemed a little bemused to seat us.

Hoping perhaps if they held out long enough, we would all leave. Hungry, we took the initiative and sat ourselves. We ordered Sangria. This consisted of a large jug of wine made in a bath (or so it tasted) with a whole, unpeeled orange bobbing around in it.

And so to food. I have argentinian steak and i have had steak from Argentina. This may seem like a ridiculous notion, but they are in fact two very different things. Mine was the latter which despite probably coming from South America could just have well been peeled off the A4 for all the flavour it had.

Friends had fish, vegetarian dishes and a sampling of some other traditional dishes. Nothing seemed to be as it should be. As if perhaps they had a Polish chef in there with a little South American cook book and no command of Spanish.

La Piragua is not a fine dining restaurant neither is it really first date material. What it offers is good sized portions of simple but very tasty food. the £13 650gm steak was fantastic as were the starters and the mixed plates. (Note to self - must eat plantain more often). We went on Saturday night - no complaints at all with the service and the atmosphere was great.

Prices are good - £9 to £14 for mains, £4 for starters and avg £15 for a decent bottle of wine.

Overall its an unpretentious restaurant offering very tasty food for a good price.

We thought we would have a fantastic celebration when we booked the restaurant for a party on the 12th Nov 2006... How disappointed we were and embarrassed for our guests!

Poor and extremely slow service ! Not friendly people !!!

I have not eaten here but under recommendation decided to book it for my birthday party. I called them before hand told them the numbers they said no problem. I took the menue off the internet and mailed it to all my friends - over 30 people then booked. 4 days before the date I attended the resturant to give them the numbers and meal choices, long story short, at 12 midnight I got a call to say that they were cancelling the booking - 30 people from all over london and up to 40 miles outside Londong - because the prices they had on their internet website was out of date (by about £1 or £2) and they were not willing to accommodate - birthday celebration totally ruined .. THANKS

Six of us turned up here at 9.30pm on a Saturday night, tired and hungry. They seated us right away and served large plates of really good food and several glasses of south american wine for under £20 a head. Ok so the decor is less slick than the Beirodrome next door, but La Piragua is one of the few non-poncy, realistically priced meal options left in Islingon. I love it. If you go, try the plantain.

This is one of my favourite places, have been coming here for years. This place won't win any prizes but the food is nice and its always a treat when they serve their chicken stew (note: can you put that back on the menu!..it was brill)

The food prices range from £6.50 for stews etc to £13.00 for the huge steak..

This place is worth a try..

Very good choice for a decent churrasco (in particular if you compare with the standards of meat that you have usually in London restaurants) portions are massive and the atmosphere it is simple and very friendly reminding a real South American place. Nice food and a lot of fun!

The food quantity is substantial - don't go with a small appetite. The atmosphere were pleasant and the service was fairly speedy. Not a bad choice for those who are looking for a good Latin American food experience.
