You can't fault the quality of the food, but customer service is another matter, so much so that I won't return.

I made a booking for 9 people for a birthday celebration. I was not told that if the number rose to 10 then we would all have to choose from the feasting menu - in other words no choice whatsoever. When I called to increase the booking we ended up with an exceptionally limited choice of food for all courses. I was the customer - not the restaurant owner!!

As for the bill, it took the waiter 3 attempts to get the correct bill. Such a pity!

Honest, down to earth food at a very reasonable price. I had an excellent crab and wonderful smoked mackerel, followed by madeleines with a double expresso. The place attracts a rather trendy crowd and the atmosphere is lively; may be too noisy for my taste. In any case, an absolutely recommendable venue.

Friday, September 24, 2010 - In some way, I think B&W might be even better than the original, the menu is less challenging than at St John, the atmosphere is a breeze and one can sit there all afternoon without needing to worry about table turning, or watch neighbouring food adventurers extolling their skill of having eaten the gastronomic world. The emphasis on provenance and use of ingredients dazzle in a much understated fashion, very British and antithesis to the rest of Europe. The restaurants, very simply, deliver the goods. Humorous, a little eccentric, exacting, militant, the true paragon of Great British Cooking.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009 - My favorites of the evening were the whole crab and mayonnaise and the foie gras & duck liver toast. In the first dish, the claw meat was sweet and firm, and the crab's brown meat was decadently creamy and rich (the foie gras of the sea, anyone?). As if the crab weren't good enough on its own, the zippy mayonnaise was so tasty that when I ran out of crab, I just slathered it on slices of bread. As St. John is the place to eat if you like offal, it was no surprise that the foie gras & duck liver on toast was excellent. Hot, crisp bread smeared with a fragrant, rich liver. Simple is great.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - A meal always starts with a big pile of their great bread and before I realised it I'd scarfed down two pieces. The other two proved useful in mopping up the juices of my starter, a Blood Cake, which was an unctuous slab of Black Pudding. It was slathered with a bacon-studded compote of prunes...For me, puddings have always been the highlight of a StJ meal. My Honey Roasted Figs, Spiced Ice Cream and Shortbread had echoes of a recent dessert at Seven Park Place. Not as refined maybe but just as enjoyable.
