what the critics say

The Independent

Tracey MacLeod - 9/15

Saturday, May 30, 2009 - Unsure of what to expect from a rock'n'roll menu, we were pleasantly surprised by the unshowy modern- British fare on offer. There's plenty for the road-crew as well as the headline act, with dishes like macaroni cheese, pork chop with scrumpy jus, and fish pie. More high-maintenance offerings include Wagyu burger with foie gras, and ''rare-breed omelette with fine herbs''… The hotel may well earn its place on the itineraries of touring bands, but the restaurant will probably attract a slightly different clientele; civilians who want a flavour of life in the VIP area.

TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 3/6

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 - Mark Fuller’s places tend to land just the right side of tacky because he manages to create great food in his restaurants, the most notable being Embassy. No. 20’s menu isn’t at the exalted level of Embassy, but it’s mostly good. We were impressed by a fricassée-style dish of rose veal, perfectly tender and served with baby vegetables; and a starter of pressed ham hock was also well-made. A pudding of ‘blueberry pie’ (actually a tart) had wafer-thin pastry and stole the show.

Disappointing. I really wanted to like this place but the food let it down.

I liked the decor, very funky and modern. The staff were sweet and welcoming.

The food was average to bad. A starter of crab bisque had a funny after taste (slightly burnt flavour). Mains of chicken and goats cheese gratin was fine but just fine. I could have cooked this myself at home and I expect a bit more when dining out. Dessert was chocolate fondant with very nice raspberry icecream but the pudding was burnt half way through.

I pointed out the problem with the dessert to the waitress. She whisked it away but I had to ask for the dessert to be removed from the bill. There are places with much better food out there.
