TimeOut

TimeOut - 4/5

Thursday, June 04, 2009 - While it’s at the ladies that this new gastropub seems to be targeted, the food from chef Richard Teague (formerly of Market) won’t disappoint any chaps who want to tag along. Aberdeen Angus onglet steak, slow-roast belly pork and fish pie feature on the opening menu, wisely supplemented on our visit by an 8oz cheeseburger that should help quell any nerves about more on-trend dishes like braised rabbit with pappardelle, tomato and herbs…On the whole we’d like to go back – not least to try the new season English asparagus with deep-fried poached egg – but the beer thing left us feeling a bit bitter.

This Is London

David Sexton - 2/5

Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - Now Crouch End has a new gastropub, Villiers Terrace, formerly the Princess Alexandra. The place has been thoroughly made over with a loggy bar, a big new wooden fireplace, mirrors, chandeliers, candelabra and some wacky wallpapers and paints. There’s a big and busy kitchen, with Richard Teague, formerly at the Market restaurant in Camden, as head chef…it’s trying hard, if not yet getting it all right. Service is assiduous and it’s pleasantly busy with a much more mixed clientele than you’d ever find in Islington or Highgate.

I didn’t think that good places to eat, drink and dance existed outside of central London. A group of ten of us went to Villiers Terrace for a friend’s birthday. We ate really good delicious food with a number of the dishes on the menu being surprisingly sophisticated for a pub! The music was great and the pub got quite busy as the evening went on with a really cool crowd and a great atmosphere. I live in Fulham but if I lived any nearer it would definitely be my regular haunt. It is far flung for me but I will visit again and a gem for the lucky locals! Friendly and for foodies definitely value for money.

I have been to Villiers many times since it opened and have seen it deteriorate over this time. I visited this weekend for the last time. So many things advertised on the menu were not available. We saw our drinks order sit on the bar for at least 5 minuted before it was brought to us. When our starters hit the pass and sat there I wanted to get up and help ourselves. We were promised bread as soon as we sat down. We were then told it was delayed as it was still in the oven. Eventually stone cold bread turned up after our starters...sorry just too late. Chips that were ordered with the main also failed to arrive. We brought this to their attention and they said they would arrive in 30 seconds. Well as you can guess when they arrived 5 minutes later it was just too late. They offered desert menus which never arrived so we cut our losses paid up and left, never to return!

A welcome sight in trendy Crouch End. Ate there for the first time yesterday and the food was great. Great looking bar, friendly staff (which makes a pleasant change!) and great cocktails.
