Thursday, May 21, 2009 - The Nosh Bar was a Soho institution in the postwar years, much as Bar Italia became in more recent decades; the location and late opening ensured a stream of thesps and bohos. The food was secondary, mainly home-style London-Jewish snacks such as salt beef on rye, chicken soup and filled bagels. The original Nosh Bar closed in the 19080s, but new owners have recreated it in the same location. It's much smarter than the original, but prices are still low, the food's decent and the staff are friendly.

I finally went to the Nosh Bar last week having already tried many of the Salt Beef bars in London including the Brass Rail.

All i can say is that i have finally found a Salt beef place that lives up to the hype.

The salt beef is juicy, tender and the portion sizes are very generous. The rye bread was fresh and all in all it was a great sandwich. I even popped back later in the day for another sandwich...it was that good! The staff were friendly and i like the stool and food bar which gives it that diner feel.

I would recommend the Nosh Bar to all you Salt Beef Lovers out there. At only £4.95 its an absolute bargain and add in a Latke and drink and you have a hearty meal for less than £7.50.

I have found my Salt beef haven!

I totally disagree with Ian. He obviously knows absolutely nothing about Salt Beef. The Salt Beef at The Nosh Bar is hands down the best I've ever had. It is perfectly tender, succulent and juicy with a superior flavor i feel no other Salt Beef deli could challenge. There's hardly ever a trace of fat inside their sandwiches, and the rye bread is as good as you will find anywhere. And the Lockshen and Bean and Barley soups are spot on, and every time I have had one of such, it has been ladled straight from the cauldron, piping hot.

I know it's not the original, because I was a regular there from the mid 60s onwards, and for the sake of nostalgia it never will be. But besides the silly old memories of a silly old fool like myself, this place is a vast improvement. The Beef is second to none, as are a number of their other dishes; the staff are friendly; and the place is clean and smart.

Well done The Nosh Bar!

So Ian, I don't know if you are a rival Salt Beef bar, or an ex-employee, or just someone who knows nothing about Salt Beef, but you really couldn't be talking any more complete twaddle.

This is a ghastly little bastardisation of a place and nothing like the original. No tables to sit at, microwaved soup, fatty salt beef and a meagre choice of pseudo-Jewish dishes.

Avoid like the plague and take a trip elsewhere for proper deli food.

Tender meat yes but £4.99 for a sandwich is nudging the boundaries of good value. Bagels are small. Interesting place, good window seats and a tad too much mustard. Not bad for a change but it's not going to be a regular haunt. A few more Jewish options on the menu would help too.

The salt beef in this place is fantastic, the portions are exactly the same as selfridges' brass rail, and it is almost half the price. I dont know how they are managing to compete, but they definitely are, and they are also definitely out in front in my opinion. The bean and barley soup is also an absolute must. The staff are friendly and chatty (maybe because the place is still newly opened) and the decor is great. Very inexpensive, great value for money, everything i ate or drank was superb, very nice atmosphere, and very good service. Well done indeed.

Wednesday, April 22, 2009 - The interiors live up to its name, it’s indeed done up like a deli bar with highish stools, unintimidated lighting and the chequered floor will ensure this place weather well over time…Here we go, salt beef on rye. Very good meat indeed, this is as good as the Selfridges’ but at nearly half the price! For central London, this is a major bargain.
