The London Paper

Feargus O'Sullivan - 14/20

Wednesday, April 15, 2009 - Dastarkhan is without doubt the best Kazakh ¬restaurant in London. Admittedly there aren’t many, but don’t let that put you off. Kazakh cooking is a curious mix of east Asian and ¬Russian influences, plus the odd Turkish twist…Dastarkhan’s version of this cuisine is basic but ¬filling. A main of beshparmak, a bland dish of ribbon noodles, potato, lamb and veg, is translated as “five ¬fingers” (though it tastes more like two). Far better are manti, huge dumplings halfway between Chinese baozi and jumbo Ukrainian ¬pierogi. Stuffed with lamb and pumpkin and served with sour cream, they’re chunky, juicy, good.

Whoever says its a good place - has serious problems.

1) Menu in is different from the website

2) website says they have shisha, BUT they DONT

3) had to stand at the entrance looong time waiting to be seated and the waitress was slooooowwww...

4) the menu is very short and HALF of dishes were finished that day, basically the main cook wasnt in so there were only starters and drinks, of hich they DIDNT warn when we just came in

why would you even open the restaurant at that day when the cook is out and you have NOTHING to serve? OMG!

what a dissapointment!!!!

A-W-F-U-L. TERRIBLE. INCREDIBLY BAD, as bad as it could ever go!

I called the restaurant 1 day before going there. I called them during the day, and they said it's fine, we are waiting for you. NO ONE on the phone mentioned that their cook was sick, so didn't come to work, hence none of the MAIN dishes was available to order!

We were given the menu, which was already extremely short and not appealing! What's the point of giving a menu if for EVERY SINGLE ITEM I asked for I got the same answer - the cook is sick, so she stayed at home, she'll be in tomorrow.

I had already ordered two bottles of Coke, and I was told that I will be charged service fee even though they had NOTHING to order there. Eventually, they charged me only the Coke price and we left.

They had no change for a £10 note, the restaurant was almost empty, and I received NO apologies for providing such an awful service and not telling me that there is nothing to eat there.

This is the WORST restaurant I've ever been to, and I very much suggest to keep from it as far as you can. Just DO NOT waste your time going all the way up to Holloway Road.

P.S. The menu is totally different from what is written on their Web site. Add to that the fact that they don't do shisha anymore.

The restaurant was completely empty when we arrived and it stayed that way for the rest of our night here. Background noise was provided by a band playing in the pub below, trying to be drowned out by Uzbek music, but failed. The traditional seating on the floor is uncomfortable, you are literally sitting on wood with a rug on it..not the cushions you would expect.

Menu is limited, a few central Asian dishes alongside random meals such as chicken Kiev. Didn't think it would be hard to ruin a grilled chicken breast but they succeeded. The rest of my party had the traditional dishes which were average at best. If your looking for this particular cuisine go to Pasha in camberwell.

Overall, bland food, poor service (half of us had finished our main before others were served). Wouldn't come back or advise anyone to visit.
