what the critics say

The Independent

John Walsh - 11/15

Saturday, September 19, 2009 - The front room is laid out like a wine shop with a posh bar. There's an array of bottles inside glass cabinets from which punters occasionally fill up their glasses...My pan-fried prawns with spicy chorizo and broad beans was a melange of bits: the prawns were hot and juicy, the chorizo slices a touch over-fried and tepid and the beans boringly unseasoned. My friend's grilled calamari with rocket and walnuts looked excitingly stark and monochrome but also disappointed: some of the squid roundels were burnt at the edges, the dressing wasn't strong enough...The wine, however, made up for it.

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 - The Kensington Wine Rooms is the latest venue to make a go of enomatic, or wine-dispensing, machines. When you find something you love and can afford, you simply come back and tell the machine to dispense a glass's worth, and it will charge you accordingly...We went for crab cakes with chilli jam, which were good though overpowered by dill and slightly mushy, and chorizo, scallop and broad bean salad that was playful, fresh and moreish. Meats here are excellent. My fillet steak with Bearnaise, watercress and chips was deep, tender and charcoaly, just as God intended.

I'm eating there almost every week, if not every work day.

Food is superb and not expensive, staff is very friendly and effective.

I would recommend it as for small parties (wine collection is impecable) so for business lunch (quiet and calm). One of my favourtite restaurants in London.

We went last night and it was surprisingly busy for a Wednesday night. Service was fantastic and the staff were brilliant, really knowledgeable and passionate about the wines. Food was very good - we had basically the whole tapas menu and it was all fantastic.

We spent quite a bit in the end as we were trying to many different wines but they were all good and great if you want to try different wines by the glass.

Can't wait to go back!!

The Kensington Wine Rooms is lovely. The Wine bar and Tapas area has a very impressive feel to it. The whole self-service thing is very different but fun and you end up chatting to just about everyone (well, if you are like me anyway).

Great to see Kedgeree on the Brunch menu.

I actually missed lunch as my train back from the coast was late in but I joined my wife and family after their meal at the Kensington wine rooms for a couple of drinks. The staff were very friendly and explained how the pre pay wine card worked and how to sample the different wines. I think Selfridges had tried to use the same system but the local trading standards were being difficult about selling wine that wasn't in the prescribed 175ml and 250ml glasses. Anyway here you can buy a "taste" or the more usual serving from a choice of about 30 wines. i tried 3 different choices which were very nice.

The menu is limited but then people are here mainly for the booze. Having said that my wife said her fillet steak was lovely and the cheese she shared with her sister afterwards excellent. They do also have a tapas menu. It all looked very nice and reminded me of the Enoteca's you get in Italy where you can try a variety of wines along with a spot of food. It is a welcome addition to Kensington Church St and I look forward to popping in again.
