TimeOut

TimeOut - 4/5

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 - Pilpel, an Israeli-run houmous and falafel 'bar' in Spitalfields, is ostensibly a takeaway, but there are enough rustic wooden chairs, tables and shelves around the room to call it a cafe too...Choose a wholemeal or white pitta, which are baked every day, and watch the staff deep-fry every falafel fresh in front of you (each deliciously crispy disc is made using an imported falafel scoop). As with all good falafel joints, you're offered a choice of other fillings to load up the pitta: chilli, houmous, tabbouleh, chickpeas, tomato salad...

Just tried Pilpel for the first time after having walked past it often since it opened. I was very impressed!! I opted for the Falafel in a box with all the salads from the bar (which includes Houmous), some extra Aubergine and was pleasantly surprised that they give you a pitta with it. All this for £4.49 + 40p for the aubergine.

All in all I think it's great value for the area (I reckon for the extra 50p you're better off getting the box rather than falafel in pitta)....and I was absolutely stuffed after eating it! Trust me the portions are very generous! This place always has a queue out the door at lunchtimes and now I know why. I'll definitely be back for more!

quite good for lunchtime around Spitalfields. cheaper than most places in the area but i'd go for takeaway rather than sit-down because it's a small place and the music can be loud.

falafel is ok and the hummus is tasty but 3.99 for hummus and pita, maybe its cheaper to bring from home? still i would go if you are looking for something light and healthy (not burger or something) because prices are low and smoothies are very nice.

An American In London

An American In London

Monday, October 12, 2009 - It's a grab-and-go type of place. On weekdays, long queues snake out the door at lunchtime, ensuring high turnover, which is key when you're dealing with deep-fried goodies...Although I think Pilpel should throw on some red cabbage (like they do at the Parisian institution, L'As du Fallafel), I like that Pilpel's falafels are always hot from the fryer and that the servers are fast and friendly. The place is a little slice of Tel Aviv here in London, and as the days grow shorter, thinking of a Mediterranean city is no bad thing.

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 - Pilpel is small. It's a take-away really. On the edge of Spitalfields...I got some falafel in a pitta. Along with some aubergine and some hummus. Oh, and a fresh lemonade... liked that they offered me a choice of whole wheat or white pitta. And I liked that I could choose my salads. And I liked how the falafel was crunchy. A satisfying crunch. But I didn't like how I couldn't really taste the hummus. Or the aubergine...These here were cheap eats. I'd go again.
