The Independent

Toby Young - 10/20

Sunday, February 14, 2010 - I start with hare and pork rillette, followed by slow-cooked lamb shoulder with flageolet beans, almonds, prunes, saffron, cumin and coriander. The rillette has a suitably coarse texture, without too much fat, but the flavour is a little bland, requiring some mustard to bring it to life. The lamb is similarly unexciting, a bog-standard Mediterranean dish. At over 20 quid for two courses, I was expecting them to be better...Conceptually confused, and with an unremarkable kitchen offering mediocre fare, More is unlikely to be coming to a high street near you soon.

Saturday, September 26, 2009 - The main courses franked the early form. Mine was very prettily presented, a large chop of pork loin resting insouciantly on a colourful bed of chorizo, green olive and cherry tomato 'casserole'. The jus was particularly good, luckily so since the meat was a shade dry. But my friend landed the win double with a succulent ribeye steak, marinated in garlic and thyme and served precisely medium-rare as requested, with Jersey Royals and a cute little herb salad. Ice-creams were excellent, as was coffee.

Tuesday, July 20, 2010 - I had the seafood linguine as my main. Although it was relatively generous with the seafood, it was swimming in oil. I should have taken an after photo. The Service: Took my not-empty wine glass away not once but TWICE. The Atmosphere: I liked the design. It was clean and simple and uncluttered. And with the bar area up front, it would be a good place for the solo diner. But it was HOT. So hot...The Verdict: Really lovely company and conversation and a very nice afternoon out. Food just okay.

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - I was initially drawn in by the interior. After eating out in so many gastropubs which to be honest can be a bit gloomy, or in more upmarket places which are the epitome of good taste i.e. as boring as hell, it was nice to find somewhere with a bit more oomph in the décor. The fab furnishings seemed to have an effect on the efficient staff as well…You might get the impression from the above that I liked More a lot. You’d be right. At the risk of coming over all Sunday Colour supp and sounding like a complete div, it was fresh, fun and funky and I left with a smile on my face.
