what the critics say

Telegraph

Zoe Williams - 5/10

Friday, August 14, 2009 - The sides they advertise as 'family style for two or more', but I still thought steeply priced. The lobster was tender, but I could have done without the waiter's lecture on how tender and tasty it was about to be. The steak was also tender and, combined with the lobster on a forkful and doused in melted butter, unusually delicious. It filled me with a sense of plenty and entitlement. I'm not sure this was a good thing...It's not an outrage, but you'd need a good reason - profound homesickness, or some sort of obsessive disorder - to come here.

TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 2/5

Wednesday, July 01, 2009 - The interior of this London outpost is intended to evoke New York high society in Palm's heyday, with its caricatures of 'celebrity' customers on the walls, plus classic, solidly-made fixtures and fittings...So does perfect cooking justify the high pricing? Our 'medium rare' fillet (which should be very pink in the centre, brown towards the edges) was actually cooked 'medium well' - not pink at all. Was it particularly tasty? Fillet is tender, but rarely the tastiest cut - especially if cooked too much, as this was.

I took my man here for his Birthday tonight with £50 off gift voucher. Like its menu promotes, their USDA 35 days aged steak is excellent. However, the price of the USDA steak is steep. I have never have a Rib Eye Steak more expensive then T-bone. Honestly, both the Rib Eye Steak and T-bone are juicy and prefectly charred grilled. The difference is Rib Eye is from the US and T-bone is more local (Scotland). So if you love a juicy T-bone steak, Palm will be the place for you as the 20 ounce T-bone is worth its cost.

For dessert, the carrot cake is the best I have had in my life. I rarely order carrot cake as most carrot cake is too dry and too sweet. But the carrot cake here is very moist and the icing is not too sweet with a hence of spice.

The service is worth the 12.5% service charge. Our waiter is very attentive and gave us good suggestion on wine and cooking methods on our steak.

For special occasion, come here for their T-bone steak, hash bown and carrot cake. Very yummy here, but pricy.

Great Steak, fantastic lobster, good wine list, delicious cocktails and the service was faultless. We had been to The Palm 1 in NYC before and weren't disappointed by the London branch. The only thing that I don't like is the location - too far away from everywhere!

We went there of my birthday and it was fantastic.

I don't understand the reviews here. First off, this is a STEAK place. Good steak does not come cheap, and this is USDA flown-in-fresh beef. If you want reasonable prices, go to the local Harvester. You are in Belgravia people, that should tell you something about the price point.

The steak i had (filet mignon, medium rare) was insanely good, and perfectly cooked, best steak i've had in London, and i've eaten at all the so called steak places here (Santa Maria del Buen Ayre was good, haven;t been there in a while but good spots are the exception to the rule).

This is comparable to a very good steak in New York - it won't beat it, but it's right up there. The sides - while good - can use some work but you know what, for the experience of a decent piece of beef, i'm not going to moan.

We also had an energetic 8 year old boy with us, who was really looked after and treated well, and he loved the tour of the chiller with all the beef.

Can really recommend this place. And for the reviewer talking about the LOUD BRAYING Americans, let me tell you, Brits (and i'm one myself) can be JUST as annoying when you hear us on foreign soil, talking about how it's just so much better back home. Why not order a cocktail from the bar, and soak up the atmosphere - either that or dig yourself a little empire over at Rules?

An awful dim lit room where the noise level is high and resounding as there are few soft furnishings. This, combined with the unmistakeable LOUD sound of americans braying at each other can be offputting for anyone trying to have a conversation at normal decibels.Portions are generous.however food is tasteless, maybe they are hoping the portion size will somehow overcome the fact the food is mediocre? The prices are astronomical for anyone not on expense account dining. There is far better to be had for this money in London, and in better surroundings.

had a great diner last sunday with my girlfriend at the palm.

we both had the oysters for starter, and a 400g matured rib eye each for main course.

the oyster were succulent and the meat was incredible, cook well, well season,. full of flavour, and so tender .all the side vegetable were very tasty too .

Everything was serve as big portions and good quality food, that one of the raison it doesn t ,seems very cheap on the menu, but a steak of this quality isn t anywhere, and I will be happy to have it again

the service was very friendly and efficient exactly as you would expect in this type of establishement, many thanks to mikael our waiter and specially steve the new man in charge of the restaurant,I even had the chance to see the kitchen

A restaurant one third full on a Saturday night is usually a good warning sign, but sometimes it is worth living life a little dangerously. Just not at this restaurant. London is in need of a few good steak restaurants, so I came to Palm with high expectations, especially having dined at their restaurants Stateside. I know jet fuel prices are high, but our cow must have flown over, quite comfortably, on a private jet. At £50 a pop for a 400g steak you start trotting into Wagyu price territory. The sirlion was quite unremarkable. I have had better steak in London at Gaucho, Goodmans, and at a friend's Sunday afternoon BBQ. The sides, while generally plentiful, were on the cold side of hot. As expected the prices on the wine list would make Trump blush, but what surprising was the restraint the restaurant showed in extorting their clientiele; the list is embarrassingly short, something that the 6 pages of font size 18 print could not hide. Dessert was tasty and they did not hold back on the portions. Perhaps, the restaurant's strategy involves giving the clientele a sugar high before they receive the bill. Speaking of the bill, it was of such magnitude that Umu suddenly looked like the Happy Meal option. A high-stakes game of credit card roulette is the only thing that would tempt me back to this expense-card blackhole. Even then, everybody at the table would be a loser. At £100 a head before wine for a two course dinner, it helps if you have a taste for instant noodles. That's all you'll be able to afford for the two weeks after dinner.

Went there on a Tuesday evening without reservation. Eventually got seated after a 25 minute wait by the bar. Service was friendly but a bit inattentive and staff had no memory. We ordered bread and butter and got bread but no butter. We ordered ketchup, mayo and mustard and got ketchup and mustard but no mayo. However, the best thing of this place are the prices! You get a (good but not exceptional) 10oz mignon for only £39. Plus sides, plus 12.5% tip! The bill for a party of three came to only £230 without starters and nothing fancy.

Service was really poor and we had to wait a lot before being seated.

Food was good but not exceptional at all. It is very noisy.

PRICES ARE COMPLETLY INSANE FOR WHAT YOU GET.

Dos Hermanos

Dos Hermanos

Monday, June 01, 2009 - Given the main event was so disappointing I won’t go on about the soft skin-on chips or the creamed spinach that should have at least spoken of those two ingredients. I will, however, mention the service again which was, in the US way, friendly, courteous and helpful. Everyone including the GM seemed genuinely perturbed that I hadn’t had a good steak but in the end if they can’t deliver on their raison d'être then they’re not much use to me. The bigwigs of the surrounding Embassies will love it. Established places, like Hawksmoor and Goodman shouldn’t be quaking in their boots just yet.

Bellaphon

Wednesday, May 27, 2009 - 10oz (280g) of Aged USDA Prime New York Sirloin Steak. Medium rare as requested. It was melting, buttery, rich and luxurious...You know that when piece of meat is of reference quality like this one, it doesn’t need a sauce as an accompaniment. I was perfectly contented after this dish…Even with the 50% discount and lack of booze, you can see from the bill that the place is expensive. I'm glad that my visit here was rewarded with a fine meal, I just hope that the steak I had wasn't a one-off.
