I visited the restaurant on number of occasions. From the moment we walked in the staff were very friendly, the food was great and the dessert (home made tiramisu) was delicious. We definitely will be visiting again.

We took some American friends to Black Pepper on the last evening of their stay in the UK. We got there on time, 6.45 pm, and were given the fixed price early evening menu. There were six people at the table and some lively conversation. The waitress came to take our drinks order and food order, but we weren't ready. She came back five minutes later, and was very officious and hurried us all through the ordering process, literally saying "Right...next" before proceeding on to the next person. She seemed to have an 'attitude' although we didn't know why, as everyone in our party was faultlessly polite to her. She also walked away twice while we were trying to give our drinks order (a carafe of water, a bottle of wine and two coctails - one non-alcoholic).
The drinks came, and then the food. The starters were uninspiring. As a main, one of our party had penne arrabiata - which was undercooked. It's one of the simplest pasta dishes to cook and it was botched. To their credit, Black Pepper did not charge for this dish when the fault was pointed out to them. The steaks were ok, but dull. The deserts were sub-standard. The panna cottas were served in martini glasses, and covered with a thick gelatinous layer of fruit compote. It was obvious that these had been in the fridge for a number days, and the compote had formed a film on top of the glass. The panna cotta itself was little more than custard that had been left to set. One of our party had a creme brulee, which after he had cracked the sugar topping, he found had curdled: the actual creme of the creme brulee, instead of being smooth, had formed little lumps and tasted sour. It was sent back and replaced, but the damage had been done, and the evening spoiled. Suffice it to say, we won't be going back there, and would encourage others not to either, as it is, at best, a lottery as to what sort of service you are going to get, and whether your food will even be cooked.
