what the critics say

This Is London

Fay Maschler - 3/5

Thursday, July 30, 2009 - Yaki soba - fried noodles with squid, prawns and vegetables - was a fine backing group for the star of the meal. Everyone loves the sweetness and softness of black cod miso but I haven't had it better than at Hi Sushi Izakaya. It is one reason for the three-star rating. Another is the inspired dessert of caramel chawan mushi with raspberries and a Chinese gooseberry, and the third the group's mission to make Japanese dining comprehensible, accessible and reasonable without too much compromise.

The London Paper

Feargus O'Sullivan - 2/5

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 - The first impression when you enter Covent Garden's Hi Sushi Izakaya is relief. In a grid of streets full of tawdry eating holes for clueless out-of-towners, the calm stylishness of this Japanese grill and sushi bar is like a cool drink in a desert. Decked out in traditional Japanese tavern style, its pale wood and bamboo interior, trickling waterfall and tables sunk into tatami mat-lined benches could make it a wonderfully soothing place for an after-work or pre-theatre pitstop.

Hi Sushi Izakaya is small and cramped and not very clean unfortunately - a bad sign for a sushi restaurant. They have a Tasting Menu at £15 per head with unlimited cold sushi (only 5 portions at a time and a £5 charge for any wastage!) and a few hot items. And you only get an hour and a half! The sushi is ok - but very limited choice - but the hot items are dripping with oil and they are extremely stingy with their portions. The hot items can only be ordered once and their idea of a portion of fried squid for 2 people is 2 pieces! They then impose a compulsory service charge of 10% per person on the bill. You have to pay it whether you like their (low average) service or not! That tantamounts to cheating the customer. All in all an avoidable experience!

Worst eating experience ever!! My partner and i ate here in April 2011, we just wanted something very quick to eat before going to a show. My partner ordered the buffet option (which was basically sushi and they bring it to you so it isnt as if you can keep having as much as you like), i ordered a noodle dish on the menu. We were told that we couldnt share the buffet food, which was not a problem.

However, when the food arrived, all they did was to watch us eat it, it was the most uncomfortable eating experience i have ever had, we couldnt even eat the food with someone constantly walking past and watching us eat.

There was a service charge on the bill, which i said i wished not to pay, but i had to, i explained i was not happy and the waitress just laughed. Upon leaving i asked for the manager and explained how disgusted i was, she did not even apologise, even when i said no one has even apologised, she still didnt, she just said oh right. Shocking i would never recommend this place to anyone.

Having had a pleasant meal here once before I was looking forward to my visit, sadly the food and service did not match expectations. The staff were nice enough but made a real hash of the order resulting in having to send back some of the nigiri three times as it was not what we ordered. Whilst the sashimi was average the sushi was below par, akin to pre-made packaged version available for half the price elsewhere. Particularly poor was the soft shell crab maki, avoid at all costs! We decided to settle up and continue our meal elsewhere. For this enchanted evening we were charged seventy quid and to add insult to injury after accepting the standard service charge within the bill was then passed the machine on the gratuity screen for an extra tip attempt!

Save your money and go elsewhere, very poor
