This Is London

Friday, March 05, 2010 - A Lemon Sole special was a well-baked fish in an enjoyably winey and buttery sauce with tiny capers and snippings of chive, with three plain spuds. Braised rabbit and green olive ragout was tender and well-flavoured if a bit garlicky for nanny, served with ribsticking cheesey gnocchi. A 'wood-fired pizza' of chicken, pancetta, sage and pecorino was bland, even twee, with a slightly pastryish base, chilli oil being offered to perk it up for any riproarers in the party. A pint of Adnams was just as good as in Southwold.

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 - The menu could be described as Modern European, leaning towards British and Italian...Salt cod croquettes were simple but satisfying, with crisp crust and smooth filling, and were served with a lemon aioli that looked and tasted homemade. The kitchen makes full use of its wood-fired oven, so we ordered a pizza to pitch it against the high standards of another recent new restaurant, Pizza East in Shoreditch. Although it's not trying to compete in terms of authenticity, it was still a winner: a crisp base, rich tomato sauce and garlicky marinated prawns.

Had Saturday lunch here. The place was already full when we arrived at 12:15 - very popular with families.

Service was friendly and there was a good vibe. The menu is not too long (usually a good thing) with quite a lot of pizzas. These are not cheap - small ones cost around £9 and large ones around £14. We first shared a starter of fried calamari. these were well done but nothing special. For the mains we had three pizzas and the lamb pie. The pizzas were ok, we've certainly had better in London. The pie was home made with fresh mash on top but the meat was an unappealing grey.

We didn't try any dessert as a big group of about 20 girls had come in and the service suffered.

Wife’s Birthday we had a private section upstairs which was perfect. Although we were told the table was between 2-5pm not once was we pushed or rushed. The staff was excellent and considering we bombarded them with requests they never gave the impression it was too much for them. The atmosphere was really lively and you could sense the contentment.

Can’t really fault the food at all, and the variety was exceptional. Pork was really, really moist and I would recommend that.

All in all a great experience and considering we come from East London will definitely return. Thanks to the team, keep it going

We had our Christmas lunch on 21st December 2010 there and we had a fantastic day. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, wine and Champagne was excellent and the service was great! I can definitely recommend The Orange for a dinner or just to have a drink there.

A brilliant restaurant. I took a party of twenty for Sunday lunch, for a roast this is without doubt one of the best in London. The value for money on the lunch is fantastic, the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, the staff were attentive, helpful and friendly, and really made the day. I cannot recomend this place enough for good food, wine and value.

We had dinner at the restaurant last night for the first time, and loved it. The food was great, and we were particularly impressed by the service.

Due to, um, administrative errors, we hadn't booked. I'd rung earlier in the afternoon to ensure that the chefs could sort non-dairy dishes, and was told that we'd probably wait for about 10-15min if we turned up at 7:30. Having looked at the menu, I was really enthusiastic about eating there and so we figured we'd hope for the best. When we arrived, the woman handling the downstairs dining area said, very apologetically, that it would actually be about 30min or so. She sent us upstairs to the area with the sofas, and told them to expect us. We were welcomed when we got upstairs, and then had a drink in very comfortable and not too loud surroundings. The very kind staff gave us updates on our table, always with a smile. The dinner itself was great (and the non-dairy was, of course, not a problem). The food was plentiful and delicious.

Next time we'll remember to book, just because it does seem a lot quieter upstairs, but all in all the four of us were really impressed

My girlfriend suggested we try this new-ish place before Xmas and we had an excellent meal. It feels less 'posh' than their other places (Thomas Cubitt & Pantechnicon Rooms - both good, especially for smart lunches) and we liked the stripped back airyness of the dining room. Nice comfortable bar area too.

Food was very good. Quality ingredients, proper pizzas and a nice slow-cooked lamb shoulder. Only thing that didn't appeal was the desserts. Adnams and Meantime on tap. Nice smiley staff for the most part.

We'll definitely go back!

We had our girlie Christmas meal here last night. I was a little nervous as the pub opened recently but needn't have been, it was one of the best Christmas meals we've had! The pub itself was light and airy with plenty of room at our table for us all, instead of being squashed in as can happen with a big group. The food was excellent, many of us opting for potted duck to start which was very tasty (and filling!). The turkey dinner was plentiful with large slices of turkey and an array of vegetables including butternut squash and pickled cabbage. We only just managed to fit dessert in with very rich and nutty chocolate pudding and individual tarte tatins. Service was good, the waitress informed us that there were only a few bottles of the wine left which we were drinking and would we like her to put some aside for us, very thoughtful. An excellent meal and look forward to sampling their wider menu.

Love the Thomas Cubitt so thought I would give the group's new place a try. Pretty good food and lovely light and airy dining room, but sadly one of the staff was quite rude and impatient with us. Hope these are just teething problems as it has the potential to be a nice local place.

It was our first time at The Orange and we were very impressed. The restaurant is set out on 2 floors and the furniture is very rustic and comfortable. A very warm and inviting atmosphere. The food was fabulous, waitresses friendly and the service was perfect.

Prices for food and wine excellent and very reasonable.

We had a great time and will be returning with friends.
