TimeOut

Guy Dimond - 4/5

Thursday, June 03, 2010 - In many ways the newer Abu Zaad is a generic Edgware Road Middle Eastern restaurant - no alcohol , tiled interior, big ornate lanterns, Arabic satellite TV, nutty music - but the menu lists many brilliantly executed Damascene dishes seldom seen in London. A bowl of fattet hommos comprises chickpeas, crisp fried pieces of flatbread, and garlicky yoghurt, garnished with paprika and chopped parsley, served warm. Another vegetarian, main-sized starter is the hara isbah, pasta strips cooked up with tamarind and lentil, mixed up with more of that crisp fried bread, then topped with fresh coriander leaves and big chunks of red-hued radish pickle. Of course, the grilled meats are good too.

I went to Abu Zaad about three times and unfortunately the quality of food seem to deteriorate with each visit. On one occasion we actually we left the restaurant before finishing our food (it was that bad). Their branch in Edgware Road is not any better, if not worse! The restaurant is also small and dingy, tables are so close to each other, I had to keep standing to let people go through. The amount of food on the plate is so little and not really nice. I come from that part of the world and I'm afraid their food is a disgrace.

At one of these occasions, I noticed that one of the staff is swearing at a customer only because he entered with his children's buggy. So, you can add to all above mentioned bad things unwelcoming staff.

I'll never go there again coz its simply a waste of money.

Food was average to good, but unreasonable service cover price of an extra £1 per dish, they even try to add the extra £1 on bread which only cost 30p each.

reluctant to order many dishes for the unreason service cover, I dont mind paying 10% if service is good but paying 300% for bringing bread, are having a laugh!?

I went there last month with a few friends. I thought the location and decor was nice and the food was brilliant. Great choice and service and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Would highly recommend.

Happt staff, warm welcome, great choice in menu and the food is excellent quality and value for money, have been a Shephards Bush customer for a couple of years and now when we go into Central London we have the second venue.

Thursday, July 30, 2009 - Abu Zaad bills itself as a Syrian restaurant, but to all intents and purposes I think Lebanese is more accurate...Mixed Grill: Skewers of lamb cubes, chicken cubes and minced lamb (kofte) with rice (an option of chips is available, but why fuss as they're only the frozen variety and besides rice is more authentic). No complaints, excellent...Abu Zaad is more than au fait with me, the menu has enticed me enough. I've risen to the bait. Highly recommended.
