TimeOut - 5/5

Tuesday, March 09, 2010 - We're big fans of Ben Townsend's minuscule coffee bar, and our latest dose of his team's excellently-pulled espressos and faultless flat whites proves that size doesn't matter when it comes to finding quality coffee. Square Mile's winter blend is currently their 'house' espresso. This particular batch of the temperamental blend was roasted less than two weeks before our visit; thus it remained steadfastly mellow with flavours that edged more towards the deep cocoa notes than the bouquet of 'wonderful fruits' expected as the roasted beans get older.

Good coffee, but rather small measures - and I don't think this is down to superior quality of the product as you can get comparable stuff at Lantana, Fernandez and Wells, etc. But their loyalty scheme tips the balance in their favour value-wise as it's buy six get one free.

If I remember rightly this place used to be a dinky little bookshop. Well, they got the name right - it's literally just a 'room' with a few bench seats for eating-in and just enough space for the coffee, the counter and some baked stuff. (Try the muffins, they're lush). Coffee is Square Mile, naturally, and about a million times better than anything you could previously get around Great Ormond Street.

Probably best for an on-the-go breakfast / lunch stop but it really is worth a visit if you work nearby.

Tuesday, August 04, 2009 - Like Dose and Taste of Bitter Love, it's small and as cliches go, perfectly formed to boot. As soon as one walks in you're greeted by a smiling chap that's Ben. To come across an affable proprietor, who's also a barista and standing proudly by the La Marz coffee machine, then more or less everything else is a foregone conclusion. This place is indeed superb...Coming back here is a must as I've already identified the wonderful ease of the ambience that's coupled with good coffee, my whims are satisfied no end. Drink and enjoy, highly recommended.
