Sanxia Renjia

Food here is generally very good by London standards as long as you know what to order. Many Westerners fall into the trap of going for stripped out set menus and the standard sweet and sour rubbish. The food tends to be quite spicy. They have a Chinese menu as well as an English menu. Apart from the a la carte there is also the option for Hot Pot (search if you do not know). The majority of diners are Chinese and unfortunately quite a lot are actually students which does drag down the atmosphere of the place and tarnishes it with a relatively cheap feel. That being said the food was delicious and the quantity is insane to the amount that 4 of us could not even dent the 5 dishes we ordered due to the massive quantity. The price is also below typical London fare.

If you are after good yet expensive Chinese food and very bad service go to Sanxia Renjia.
Please make a note that they have a new policy that they will not serve you tap water unless you buy a bottled drink, even if you do order 3 course meal.

There are 2 menus. One is bound and is full of the usual boring stuff offered to Westerners in Chinese restaurants. The other menu, with photographs, is an absolute treasure. Not only is the stuff beautifully fresh and the flavours much more subtle and interesting than most Chinese restaurants, but all sorts of dishes like bitter melon, frogs' legs, duck tongue and other delicacies can be found which are seldom seen in Britain unless you order off-menu.
I have recommended it to a number of friends and they have taken their friends and, so far, I have yet to hear a single bad word. The portions are generous and it's not that expensive, either.

Sanxia Renjia is one of the few restaurants in London offering cuisine from Hunan province in China, famed for its mouth-watering use of chillies and home to Chairman Mao. The food is delicious, authentic and good value at about £15 a head (without beer/wine). Heartily recommended!
