This Is London

This Is London - 4/5

Thursday, February 25, 2010 - Try the tostadas de ceviche (sea bass marinated in lime and herbs). And flautas - tacos with cheese, potato and jalapeno chilli, which are pleasantly fiery. My companion fell upon the carnitas tacos (pork slowly cooked in an aromatic bouquet of spices) and la pollera, chicken paillard marinated with avocado, tomato and lettuce. But the triumph is pan de elote (cornbread with onions and salsa), which has the lovely, gloopy texture of bread and butter pudding. 'I've not tasted cornbread like it, even in Mexico City!' my companion enthused. The wine list is modest so stick to cocktails...

Guy Dimond - 4/5

Thursday, September 10, 2009 - Chef Tia Patty (Aunt Patty) is from Tabasco, and her cooking is quite sophisticated for a small kitchen. One of the day's specials was sopes, which are small fried corn-dough bowls, filled with beans and in this case topped with chicken, braised pork or mushrooms with sauteed mild chillies. Masa, or maize flour, is also fashioned into tacos such as the fish-filled versions you find in Veracruz on the Gulf coast, though in this case they use sauteed sea bass. Coarser corn meal can be cooked as corn mash (polenta), then served with bacon-thin strips of grilled pork tenderloin...

I have never written a restaurant review in my life but I have woken up this morning feeling compelled to warn my London neighbours how truly awful this place was last night.

The service was hilariously bad.... the mains turned up before the starters, one of the mains and one of the side order did not come at all. When we complained the waitress blamed the kitchen in a way that seemed to suggest it wasn't her job to make sure we got our food. erm.... you're the waitress love !

When the final main did eventually turn up - after everyone else had finished eating - it was the wrong dish. This resulted in a short argument with the waitress who was convinced she had brought the correct dish and we were the ones who were mistaken, No apology, nothing. We were then told it would take 15-20 minutes to prepare the dish we had actually ordered at which point we decided just to cancel it and get the hell out of there. So one of my friends left the restaurant having not eaten.

To cap it all.... when we crossed the service charge off the bill, the waitress snapped at us and we ended up having a fairly vocal exchange with her in the middle of the restaurant. At one point she even threatened to go and get the manager to make us pay it ! We literally could not believe what was happening!

I can't even say that the food was particularly good. It was pretty bland and the portion sizes were so small that you would probably need to order 2 mains per person if you were feeling hungry.

It was almost worth going ti this place for the comedy value as we did have a good laugh about the waitresses behaviour in the pub afterwards... That said... I won't be going back.... EVER!

Boho Mexica is the worst place I have eaten in London in the last 20 years. I invited 5 of my closest friends to celebrate my birthday. The total bill was £140+. Less than half of the starters were served, some arriving during the middle of the main meal. The waiter got the order wrong which left one of us eating something we didn't even order. To make matters worse half of us finished our main meal before the rest of my friends were served. The food looked like something a novice cook would have prepared. The 'recommended' pork dish was rock hard and cold.

Shambolic service, flavourless overpriced food. Absolutely awful.

Not even sure where to start with this - lets just say there are some reviews on here that echo my feelings - i hear you Alisa, sinsybinsy!!!

I went to Boho last night with 2 friends and ONLY because the restaurant i wanted to go at first was fully booked (Hawksmoor)..

Looked promising at start - friendly vibe, some loud Mexican music in the background and helpful(ish) service.

We should have ran after the starters - oily tortilla chips and possibly worst guacamole known to mankind & the charros tasted like washing up liquid that's been brewing in beans... We only went on to order the main as it was late and starving.

My friends ordered the Enchiladas and i the pork with herb sauce... The portions were extremely tiny and after the first bite it was downhill... the food seemed to have been cooked a few months ago and stored in the bin waiting to be served to us!! Autrocious, tasteless, zero sense of what Mexican food is and how you can charge £11 plus quid per main is just day(night) light robbery!! Now, not everything was as bad, the wine saved the day for us - lovely Argentinian Malbec and thats about it!!! Service got worse in the end, especially after requesting the staff to remove the 12.5% optional charge; (note to staff if you read this - its called OPTIONAL for a reason, if the service & food is great, i do not have an issue paying it)!! I did get overcharged although the manager and one of the waitress were extremely apologetic and i got refunded, but this has to be my worst restaurant experience over my full 33 years! I imagine Boho to be a good place for a few drinks but if you're thinking of eating something there, DONT!!!!! I certainly will be giving it the wide berth..NEVER AGAIN!!!

The vintage cutlery and the passable courgette empanadas don't save this Mexican restaurant from providing a thoroughly disappointing dining experience. The Tacos with beef were extremely dry and chewy and needed a sauce. The vegetarian tacos were inexplicably bitter and the bean and cornflour masa tasted like the kind of vacuum packed food you'd taste on a nasa space shuttle (and not in a good way!)

Avoid this place and check out Cantina Laredo instead, you get bigger portions (so you don't end up spending like £40 and end up being hungry at the end of it) and the food and service are excellent.

The food and service is really really good (like Taqueria in Westbourne Grove) but the portions are small for the price (also like Taqueria!). Don't go with price conscious friends (who will compare it unfavourably to any one of the nearby Vietnamese establishments both on grounds of price and portion size). Do go if you've just got paid/received your bonus and want to try some really authentic Mexican flavours. The cocktails are also fantastic.

I have been to Boho many times and I can't fault it...the service is warm and friendly, my friends and I have always felt welcomed by the staff. I spoke with the owner (we got chatting over the delicious cocktails!) who told me he flies his aunty in from mexico to especially assist the chef with her homemade Mexican culinary cooking skills! Now that I do believe as the food is really fresh, tasty and so well prepared (the chicken is so tender and not like the overcooked dry slabs you get in some places)

Don't believe the negative comments,I honestly don't understand why there is a bad experience to be had at Boho!!

I have been to Boho a few times now.. The cocktails are delicious (especially the blueberry mojito) and I can't get enough of the guacamole! Great place for drinks after work.

I have never had a problem with service, and have always found the staff to be pleasant and helpful.

As for the food... It is not your typical tacky Mexican, so you aren't going to find huge portions and lots of dip!

It's more like tapas, so you do need to order a few dishes..

I have enjoyed everything I ate there ( I am a vegetarian so can't comment on the meat dishes)

Good Margaritas - terrible food, expensive and tasteless, quite possibly the worst value for money I have experienced in London. Avoid Avoid Avoid!

I wish I read the reviews before my boyfriend and I chose to go there for dinner tonight.... now I am adding another comment to a long list of disappointed experiences that everyone here seemed to have.

To be fair the atmosphere and service were good. But do not be encouraged by that. I have to agree with commentators who said that Boho Mexico was the worst dining experience they had in London. The restaurant clearly has a pretension of upmarket Mexican cuisine, but you will get better tasting and better quality Mexican at a street stall in Brick Lane market. However that is not a problem....the problem is the size of the portions and the cost.

The portions were TINY and the prices were RIDICULOUS. We ended up spending £50 (including two bottles of beer) and left hungry (I had to cook another dinner when we got back). There are so many good restaurants in shoreditch where for £50 quid you can get a bottle of wine and stuff your face-why did i go to Boho????????

to cut the long story short BOHO MEXICA IS THE WORST RESTAURANT I HAVE BEEN TO IN LONDON. AVOID IT!

(this is a first time I waste my time writing a restaurant review, but people must be warned. I will paste it to all restaurant review sites)

Londonelicious

Londonelicious

Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - We order some chips and guac, an assortment of tacos, the empanadas, and the Bistec a la Mexica. Boho Mexica serves food in pretty small portions, so although everything is very attractively priced, you need to order a few dishes to really fill up. I have no complaints about the food. It's all pretty competant and delicious. The empanadas are perhaps a bit too doughy, but the tacos are pretty perfect and I dig the steak. It's the service that I can't deal with...

An American In London

An American In London

Friday, September 25, 2009 - The good news is that Boho Mexica is small, charming and cheap, with most dishes costing less than 4 pounds, making it at least 33% cheaper than the Taqueria and Green & Red...The bad news is that Boho Mexica's dishes are tiny; their tastiness varied greatly; and the service at lunch ranged from relatively-prompt (and disorganized) to disastrously-slow (and disorganized). They were, however, always polite...I'll keep trying out Boho Mexica because I have a feeling they're capable of consistently good cooking.
