This Is London

This Is London - 4/5

Thursday, February 25, 2010 - Try the tostadas de ceviche (sea bass marinated in lime and herbs). And flautas - tacos with cheese, potato and jalapeno chilli, which are pleasantly fiery. My companion fell upon the carnitas tacos (pork slowly cooked in an aromatic bouquet of spices) and la pollera, chicken paillard marinated with avocado, tomato and lettuce. But the triumph is pan de elote (cornbread with onions and salsa), which has the lovely, gloopy texture of bread and butter pudding. 'I've not tasted cornbread like it, even in Mexico City!' my companion enthused. The wine list is modest so stick to cocktails...

Thursday, September 10, 2009 - Chef Tia Patty (Aunt Patty) is from Tabasco, and her cooking is quite sophisticated for a small kitchen. One of the day's specials was sopes, which are small fried corn-dough bowls, filled with beans and in this case topped with chicken, braised pork or mushrooms with sauteed mild chillies. Masa, or maize flour, is also fashioned into tacos such as the fish-filled versions you find in Veracruz on the Gulf coast, though in this case they use sauteed sea bass. Coarser corn meal can be cooked as corn mash (polenta), then served with bacon-thin strips of grilled pork tenderloin...

My friends and I had a great experience at Boho. We thought the food was tasty, the service warm and the overall experience a 10. The music and ambiance were very cool and it was great to meet Enrique Vivas, the owner of the place.

All in all, I am already looking to head back to Boho and to another cool night out with my friends in the upcoming weeks.

This place is one of my 'locals' and I LOVE IT. If you want a big hearty meal its probably not for you, and I personally would say head to Wahaca if you want a large variety of food but if you after superb cocktails with some small portions on the side this is the place to go. The service has always been great and the atmosphere generally buzzing. I have never come across any member of staff which are rude, although they can be a bit relaxed, but hey, that is all part of its charm. If you want over attentive staff go to brick lane but personally I like being left alone with my cocktails! My favorite cocktail is the Carlota and with some of their divine corn on the cob with chilli salt I couldn't ask for more.

PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING THIS PLACE!!! The manager is the rudest person I have ever come across and you will end up spending a lot of money and leave still hungry.

I am from Mexico and I am ashamed of the way the staff treat their customers!

The portions were tiny, expensive and my chicken enchilados were disgusting. Pop in to have a cocktail but do not eat there!

Went last week with 4 of my buddies, the reality is we had a really good time. Good authentic food and great drins and atmosphere. This place reminded me of my travels in central and south eastern Mexico: Puebla Campeche, Yucatan, Tabasco, Veracruz. Must say food was just the amount of portions and spicing we wanted and definitely not your 30 minute meal.

Beign a "gringo" people think I have no idea of what Mexican food should taste like and unfortunately most americans and europeans dont (sorry but true). But under my sleeve I have 10+ years in Sales working as a Road Warrior all over Mexico always eating in places ranging from expensive hotels to the most rustic and authentic cenadurias and taquerias. So in my opinion this one takes 4 of 5 stars.

Has anyone ever heard of a German lincolnshire sausage? Ahh.. correct.. well tapas do not exist in mexican cuisine...

This is the only mexican restaurant in London that offers a good quality of REAL MEXICAN FOOD. The atmosphere is lovely with a nice decoration, the staff is very friendly and the food is excellent!!!. Dont expect to find BURRITOS in this restaurant because the burritos are NOT even mexican, they are TEX - MEX.

I m surprised about the bad reviews i ve been reading...my experience was totally different, and i recommend to make your own opinion. i ve been in Mexico and Boho Mexica is the only place in London for autenthic mexican food FROM Mexico.(they bring everything from Mexico) all the ingredients are fresh, the food is healthy. i enjoyed trying all the variety of Tacos, the handmade Tamal de Frijol and the tasty grilled pipian verde.

The staff was friendly, the music and the atmosphere cosy and charming. The portions are not big, maybe because it s about quality and not quantity specially when it s a tapas concept. it s amazing how 112 pounds between 4 and 140 pounds between 5 can be considered expensive in London (28 p/p with drinks!!!) and in a restaurant, not chain food!!

if you want to have a great time in a charming mexican ambiance try a margarita cocktail made by these amazing bartenders,,,

Ate here on Tuesday this week - I can only describe the experience as utterly bizarre! I was with daughter and 2 friends and we ordered the mexican tapas which arrived without any description of what was being put on the table - everything looked and tasted the same - it was mediocre at best. My partner ordered the prawn avocado with tomatoes (a salsa) which was a starter for 8 quid but had 3 prawns no avocado and a sauce which looked and tasted like ketchup. I informed the waitress of this and she took it away, we assumed that this would be deducted from the bill but no, she returned to our table with the same dish but with a sprinkling of chopped avocado!!! This was so bizarre!! The most pleasant dish was the black beans (side order) although unseasoned at least it could be distinguished from the other dishes. The bill came to £112 . Enter this restaurant at your own peril.

What a disappointment. I was really excited to try this place as I live locally and love Mexican food. And I don't mean greasy, heavy Tex Mex. I mean proper Mexican food based on delicate flavouring and fresh ingredients. The reviews that say people who don't like this place don't know Mexican food are totally wrong. The food here is incredibly bland, which good Mexican food certainly is not. The best thing here was the guacamole, which was saved by the freshness of the ingredients alone. Unfortunately the chips tasted a day old and were under-salted, so kind of offset the goodness of the guacamole. The lamb in the flautas de barbacoa was tender, but really lacked flavour, as did everything in the chicken enchiladas. We had high hopes for the frijoles charros, a bean stew cooked with herbs, chorizo and bacon; but this was the biggest disappointment of all. It actually tasted of nothing. Even when I tasted a bit of the chorizo on its own, it tasted like nothing. It's the first time I've sampled truly tasteless meat. In addition to the food massively lacking flavour, there are no condiments on the table - and I don't just mean tabascos (although they should have these as well). I mean not even salt and pepper, which you shouldn't have to ask for. I'm really hoping that the owners will read these reviews, as I desperately want to love this place. I go out to eat regularly and don't mind small portions and the prices here, but the food has to be worth it and in this case it just isn't.

Please, please use the benefit of social media when it comes to customer's advice here and don't eat at Boho Mexica. Terrible experience.

Food was terrible, bland, overcooked steak, greasy. And service absolutely awful. One person didn't eat because they messed up the order. Tried to charge service, we refused, got abused by the waitress, manager was no better following complaint. He actually walked to the table laughing. An absolute joke.

The WORST place I have ever been to. Something has to change here...

Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - We order some chips and guac, an assortment of tacos, the empanadas, and the Bistec a la Mexica. Boho Mexica serves food in pretty small portions, so although everything is very attractively priced, you need to order a few dishes to really fill up. I have no complaints about the food. It's all pretty competant and delicious. The empanadas are perhaps a bit too doughy, but the tacos are pretty perfect and I dig the steak. It's the service that I can't deal with...

Friday, September 25, 2009 - The good news is that Boho Mexica is small, charming and cheap, with most dishes costing less than 4 pounds, making it at least 33% cheaper than the Taqueria and Green & Red...The bad news is that Boho Mexica's dishes are tiny; their tastiness varied greatly; and the service at lunch ranged from relatively-prompt (and disorganized) to disastrously-slow (and disorganized). They were, however, always polite...I'll keep trying out Boho Mexica because I have a feeling they're capable of consistently good cooking.
