TimeOut

Charmaine Mok - 3/5

Wednesday, September 16, 2009 - Peter, ever the proud proprietor, has printed off a stack of favourable comments from the internet. They're well deserved, judging from the expertly made flat whites on our visit...A combination of roasted peaches and peppers, caramelised onion, watercress and toasted coconut was light and summery, ditto a toasted focaccia with smoked salmon and plenty of cream cheese and dill. But at 4.50 a pop (for both sarnies and small salads), it's a touch expensive for a cafe.

I work around the corner from Kaffeine and I go in there every morning for a coffee and at least a couple of times a week for lunch. This is an amazing new establishment, I'm thrilled to have popped up in the Fitzrovia area.

The interior is contemporary, considered and comfortable. The ex-science lab benches are a unique touch - complete with student graffiti and Bunsen burns! The staff are professional and welcoming. They remember my regular coffee and even my name! It's such a friendly way to start off the day!

The food amazing! Whilst there seems to be a set formula - and by that I mean, salads, thin foccacias, sandwiches and baked delights - the actual menu and ingredients of these items changes daily! AND the best part is that everything is made on site by their chef - so it's always fresh and innovative! Again every detail of the food is considered - like the characters that are stencilled in the icing sugar of their muffins! The prices are very competitive and they are no more expensive than that of all of the local competitors in their league. They're no chain cafe, so if that's the quality of food and prices you're expecting to pay, you're in the wrong place!

I have seen familiar faces in their every day - so it's safe to say Kaffeine are developing a loyal following. And with only having been open for a few weeks - it can only get better from here!!

I urge you to visit Kaffeine for yourself - if you're not impressed, you've only wasted a day - but my sense is - you'll be hooked!!!

Thursday, September 03, 2009 - The beans come from the ever dependable and by now indomitable Square Mile. First test of flattie as always the case. No superlatives required for this superb cup. Second visit confirmed that the flat white at Kaffeine is seriously good and the orange and walnut muffin was scrumptious and all...Kaffeine exists to provide us with a life-changing cup of coffee. Give the instant or $tarbucks a rest, come here instead and you'll be delighted. Highly recommended.
