Tuesday, April 13, 2010 - My starter of Heaven and Earth, which I actually do need to have explained to me, is Black Pudding with potatoes - a cannonball set on mashed spuds. Elegant it is not, with the skin of the pudding peeling away gently. I didn't know black puddings came this big to be honest, but it's big on flavour. I like it, but I can't say it's anything more than likeable. Not so sure about my mains though...Hix Soho at lunch caters to the needs of men not into fancy food, those who want to simply eat and relax. Maybe sink a drink or three.

Friday, November 27, 2009 - He continued with the Aberdeenshire beef fillet on the bone. It was peerlessly juicy, and this was cooked medium-rare. Some chips were maybe too crunchy for some tastes. The show-stopper in this course was my veal sausage with creamed onions, which was juicy, complex, perfectly seasoned, herby but not overly so, cooked just past the point of pinkness (one of the many luxuries of not being pork), and even more succulent as a result...People are excited because it's exciting, in short. Hix delivers.

This place often looked busy when I walked past in the street, so thought I must be missing out on a great new eating venue. Booked via TopTable for set menu and cocktail £20. Set menu was either 'Sprout hearts' or duck salad, not a difficult choice. Main course game pie or fish, better selection.

On the 'a la carte' menu there was fish fingers, chips & peas (!!) £17.75 + service charge - £20 for what I can get in my local cafe. Our table neighbours ordered a steak, that's all he got one streak, no veg. He did ask about mushrooms and was told they don't do mushrooms, but he could have chips at an extra cost. HaHaHa. the same local cafe I mentioned do steak complete with chips and mushrooms for £9.95, & no service charge.

Wine expensive too, other West End restaurants have a better selection which costs less.

Needless to say I will not be going back again or recommending Hix, quite the opposite!

I have been taken to this branch of Hix quite a few times and have always enjoyed it [although I don't have to pay the bill !]

The menu is always interesting, Yesterday I had woodland mushroom soup-excellent, mallard-good flavour and sea buckthorn posset- divine ! The portion of frites for two seemed a bit stingy, but otherwise all was good. It isnt a place that does overtly pretty precious food, thankfully.

The service was exemplary..attentive, courteous, responsive..what more do you want !

I was going to write a review to warn people about here but looks like I don't have to worry!

Overpriced average food, ridiculously expensive wine, friendly staff but they hustle you to get out of there for the mid evening turnover. With so much choice in London, it's appalling that a place like this manages to get punters through the door, and until people vote with their feet, us Londoners will keep getting overpriced places like this. Avoid. The Ivy is just up the road, as is Arbutus. Similar prices-different world.

Very expensive for very average food. Very disappointing.

Steak served with nothing but 3 small dishes of sauce, mustard, pesto and bearnaise from a jar really not good enough at that price. Chips are extra??

Left feeling hungry and more than a little bit ripped off.

Style over content! Dined with 3 friends - one of whom highly recommended it - however it was a big disappointment. A bit 'emperor's new clothes' for me - but I'm the little boy who will shout out - you've got no clothes on! It was a full house on a wet Thursday evening which created a buzzing atmosphere and added to the anticipation, however the food was a huge disappointment. It was so ordinary -maybe I'm missing the point, but at those prices I wanted to be blown away.

On a plus side, the service was friendly and the dessert recommendation was spot on - I can't remember the name of it but it was a chocolate creation with nuts and meringue. The other desserts we ordered were, again, ordinary

We fled before coffee with our credit cards bashed, and I'm sorry to say won't be returning.

Shocking restuarant.

Ordered steak to be told the kitchen

Had run out of chips, what is one without the other.

How embarrassing.

Poor. An overly complicated menu can't disguise for long the fact that the food is shockingly overpriced but very ordinary. The mark up on the wine leaves such a bitter taste in the mouth that you can't realy enjoy drinking it knowing how much you've been gouged for the pleasure. The one good feature was that they had a reasonable vegetarian option for one of our group, although they then spoiled that having the waiter come round and placing a platter of raw meat on our table so he could explain the cuts to an adjacent table. Shabby.

Through it's combination of fussy food and overpricing, Hix has achieved the accolade of being the only restaurant in the last five years, anywhere in the world, in which there's been nothing I was happy to order.

Incredibly disappointed by the service (or lack of it) last night. We were seated at 8.30 and despite asking 3 times for someone to take our order it wasn't until 9.30!!!

An hour to wait to order some food is not on, especially when the floor manager walked past our table no less than 6 times and glanced at our menus.....a free round of Prosecco doesn't really cut it and I would've expected service to not be included!

When the food eventually arrived, my starter of beetroot was lacking in any flavour & the main course of Pollock was tasteless.

On a Tuesday evening & not a full restaurant, I expect much more.

We have been to Hix many times. I'll tell you about it in a minute. In a nutshell it's a gem.

BUT why do they employ someone to take reservations who gets her kicks from humbling the caller? This week we tried, albeit somewhat optimistically, to get a table for Saturday night. We were told there was nothing available before 10pm, but we would be put on the waiting list. When we came to Mark's Bar on Thursday for a quick drink, we asked for an update and were told there was a good chance of us getting our Saturday table. This afternoon when we called to find out whether a table had become free, the woman answering the phone claimed to know nothing about us. Haughty, supercilious, patronising, all ever so faintly. She told us we could wait in the bar for a table to come free, if we wanted, but that the bar was "completely full" (this at 5pm).

Such a shame. They need to take a leaf out of the Wolseley/Delaunay stable of restuarants, who make the common man feel like a celebrity - and I'm sure make celebrities feel even more so.

All that said, if you can get past Cerberus and they deign to give you a table, the food is top notch, the service impeccable and the atmosphere buzzing. One of the great eateries in London today.

went there last night and the food was very average i'm afraid. complicated menu (trying too hard really) with disappointing delivery. side dishes are miniscule. and the service is simply appalling. terribly slow and casual. took half an hour to get dessert, 20 minutes for the bill and another 15 for the card terminal. i didn't feel like a customer but more like in the way. a lot to improve but anyway i will not go back.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 8/10

Sunday, December 27, 2009 - Glamorous mirrors with an art deco touch line the length of the elegant bar which stands along one side of the room. The restaurant is finished in black and white, the tables are made from a warm walnut, and the lighting is fantastic...I am sure the dessert would have been every bit as excellent as the rest of the food that we had. This was classy, skilful and refined British cooking. There was a great display of finesse, and from memory, the food was tastier than Hix's Oyster and Chop House in Farringdon.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Tuesday, December 15, 2009 - Whilst others went for some fancy fish fingers, I opted for an extremely flavoursome and well cooked roe deer chop, moistened with a glistening light jus. Accompanied by my favourite puree of all (silky smooth celeriac), it also contained a liberal smattering of yellow berries...Hix is good but at over 35 quid a head without drinks, it is easy to see the cost of the meal getting out of hand. I returned at a later date to give the bar downstairs a once over and I am pleased to report that it is stonking.

Londonelicious

Monday, November 02, 2009 - Fish fingers for me! With mushy peas. And chips. I know it's just basic comfort food, but it was exactly what I was in the mood for. And the fish fingers were pretty awesome. Great breading. The mushy peas were some of the best mushy peas I've ever had in my entire life. And the chips! Proper chips. Wrapped in old menu. Very good. The Service: Lovely, really. But then again, we were one of their only tables. The Cocktail Menu: A bit esoteric, perhaps? This isn't a bad thing...it just means it will take you forever to choose your cocktail.
