Sunday, January 03, 2010 - Blimey, it's impressive. In places, the food also matches. I sometimes run out of space before I get to dessert and it would be a tragedy to do so with Galvin La Chapelle. Their rum baba is quite simply the best I've ever eaten...Their lasagne of crab, more a light egg-bound mousse than a heavy pasta dish, is as good here as it was the first time I had it at the original Galvin bistro in Baker Street. A raw marinated tuna loin with spiky aubergine puree is a surprisingly well-structured dish. I expected yawn-worthy subtle; I got brisk, bold flavours. So clearly I admire Galvin La Chapelle very, very much.

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 - I had the veal cheek with a beautiful, incredibly French (read: more butter than potato) mash and a 'zingara' dressing, which is made of ham, tongue, mushrooms and truffles. You just had to prod the meat for it to deliquesce beautifully. The dish smelt incredibly, implausibly meaty...You simply could not inhabit a space this large and churchy without having a bit of ambition, a bit of hush around the food. I think it warrants it. Much of it is wonderful.

We went without much expectation after reading the previous review but was pleasantly surprised.

My friend was visiting from Wales and we went for the Fixed priced menu 2 course for £25.50 and 3 for £29.50. Although my husband was late and didn't arrive until 7:15ish, they were ok for us to order the fixed priced menu which supposely is only for between 6-7pm.

The starters and mains were very well cooked. The restaurant was quite quiet on a monday evening and the service was professional and efficient.

I ordered the rum baba for dessert coz I read Jay Rayner's review. Massive disappointment- I think they should stop serving that really. Perhaps no matter how well you make it, it is still a cold spongy bun with syrup, rum and some sultana on top.

We paid around £45 each in the end with the fix priced menu plus 1 glass of wine per person. I think it's excellent value for money- we easily spend that on a lazy dinner out in one of the ordinary restaurants near bermondsey st where we live- like Village East or Antico.

We found la Chapelle slightly disappointing; the room is undeniably impressive, but on a quiet Sunday evening it felt marmoreal and vast.

The service can be annoying - the pretty greeter bounding over to interrupt our conversation to make sure we're enjoying our starter, the wine arriving some minutes after said starter.

The food is good, enjoyable even, but at these prices should be a lot more exciting. The celebrated crab lasagne was more eggy than crabby and had a dull, rather solid texture - £14.50 is a lot of money for this. My sea bass with leeks, shrimps & chorizo was a perfectly nice plate of food - but again at £30 should have been rather more than that. The only freebie was the the (good) bread, so with just three courses we romped through a birthday dinner in 1hr 40 mins - I don't call that a great return for a bill of £170. For not a great deal more we could have had a superlative evening at the Ledbury.

I have had several enjoyable meals at the Galvins' much less pretentious Baker St branch, and it's to that one that I'll be returning.

i eat at Gavin Chapelle restaurant and really enjoy the foods. Some was a bit greasy but overalls it was delicious. The wine was good but not cheap and the waitress was very stunning indeed! I really like her uniform and her smile.

I would eat at Gavin Chapelle place again!

Long live Gavin!

An excellent restaurant, I had a delicious roast duck breast, just rare enough, with a truly scumptious little flaky pastry tart; my companion was very impressed with his lamb and stuffed courgette flower main course. No time for starters or puddings unfortunately but the waiting staff were very accomodating of the brevity of our visit. The sommelier was excellent. i hope to visit again soon.

I had high expectations of La Chapelle, and they were all met and exceeded!

The greeters and front of house were excellent, the maitre'd (Francesca) was always around and unobtrusive. My gin and tonic was perfect, which always puts me in a good mood.

Myself and guest had the tasting menu with wines, 7 courses with perfectly matched wines (excellent sommelier-he explained them all in a concise manner, so that the food didn't go cold) My friend has a shellfish allergy, which the kitchen handled well.

We also had the rum baba, which we had read so much about, and it was not a disappointment, Francesca (maitre'd) doused it with the perfect amount of Rum with countered the sweetness of the baba just right.

Why this place doesn't have a 2nd Michelin star is beyond me, as it matches many 2 star restaurants that I have been to easily.

Will definately be going back in the near future!

I can't sing the praises of Galvin La Chapelle highly enough. We went there last week for dinner. Menu is fantastically varied, food is of the highest quality, selection of wines was great, service was the best I've ever seen. Whilst its not a cheap night out it is worth every penny.

I took my pregnant girlfriend to Galvins on Saturday (12th) and i can not sing enough praise of this restaurant. Having been to a shocking establishment that is Boho Mexica a few weeks before, this was manna from heaven - i mean, an absolute delight..! Unbeknown to us there is a fixed 3 course lunch menu priced @ £25.50. I had to look around for Beadle as it didnt make sense. Regardless, we went for the fixed menu and after starters (Mackerel with some fancy sauce) we knew we were in for a treat! Main course (beef cheeks and Sea bream) could not be faulted.. The Maitre d was super helpful, knowledgeable and made us feel at home & he even changed the dessert menu to accommodate my girlfriend. The wine was a delight - i was the only one drinking and the choice was inspired. Ok, maybe the lunch menu is reasonably priced, but i didnt note a massive difference to the dinner one. Thank you La Chapelle for making our day - we shall most definitely be back!!.

Dined last night at this stunningly beautifull restaurant.we opted forn the menu gourmande for the two of us with the wines to match.I have to say the food was impecable at every course, all seven of them,my wifes favourites were the scallops with cauliflower puree and the mini pigeon targine. This too was the highlight of the night for me.Timing of the food was also very good with 8 to 10 minutes in between courses.Wines were interesting and were nicely explained to us by the somelier.

all in all not cheap but a really memorable night .I cant say i'm surprised at the new michelin star, this restaurant really deserves it.

Went for sunday lunch with a big group and a 5 month old. Advertised as family friendly and it really is. A table of toys as you enter and the service was just brilliant, the waiters couldn't do enough for us and all the little touches really makes a difference. Thank you very much for a lovely lunch.

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

A Rather Unusual Chinaman

Monday, March 15, 2010 - A starter of smoked duck & chestnut veloute was meagre but highly flavoured and led nicely onto the star of the show, a roast saddle of venison. Beautifully constructed, I soon tucked into the most succulent and tender pink venison which was sat on tart blueberries and sour red cabbage. Sweet chestnut puree helped balance the dish and for one split second, under the influence of such tasty meat, all was forgotten...I really enjoy La Chapelle. The service may not deliver on all levels, but the waiters are on the whole friendly and mostly accommodating.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat

Friday, February 19, 2010 - Galvin La Chapelle, the third restaurant to be opened by the Galvin brothers, has to be one of the most stunning looking restaurants in London...Apart from a few minor quibbles, the food was executed with flair and skill to produce delicious platefuls of enjoyment. I've always liked the food at Galvin Bistrot de luxe on Baker Street, and I've also been in awe of the impressive design of the bar at Galvin at Windows. And with this new restaurant, the Galvin brothers have again managed to combine both wonderful design and food for their latest reincarnation. This is an 'occasion' restaurant, and it's worth it.

An American In London

An American In London

Tuesday, December 01, 2009 - We shared one dish: the roast cote de boeuf, truffle macaroni and Hermitage jus...The beef was sliced and served tableside, perfectly medium-rare. It was all quite a to-do. The slices of beef were juicy to begin with, drizzled with the intense jus, and served with gelatinously-fatty bone marrow and sweet, creamy roasted garlic...The accompanying truffle macaroni was all comfort and earthiness. I loved the combo of bite from the cheese and the smooth cream, and I could actually taste the black truffle.
