what the critics say

The Independent

John Walsh - 12/15

Saturday, February 27, 2010 - My thinly sliced smoked eel with grilled mackerel, leek hearts and sweet mustard didn't reek of Gallic endeavour either. It was laid out in a rectangle of orange, white and brown, as pretty as an English watercolour, the eel shaved so wafer-thin it melted on my fork, the tiny bits of fish beautifully grilled. It was, in fact, so ethereal, it hardly counted as food at all...What they've brought to my professional backyard is a little too pricey and plain to be a neighbourhood drop-in site. But the food and the welcome make it a must-consider for anyone in Kensington with something to celebrate.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 4/5

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 - Excess is celebrated, whether it's a pastry crust and layer of sultry gelee round pork and rabbit terrine (plus kilner jar of headily spiced chutney and sourdough toast); deep-fried risotto arancini amuses; or the stunningly good salted caramel truffles. Sauces are hefty in flavour, enthusiastically reduced and boosted with cream and butter. Roast Icelandic cod on its bed of lentils laced with shards of Savoy cabbage seems positively blameless...Turning down the rich factor a couple of notches is all it would take to make this baby an unreservedly welcome new arrival.

Went for dinner on a quiet night and had the fixed price menu which is reasonably priced and a good test of the culinary skills without spending too much money.

The room is nice and comfortable and warming. The female staff is welcoming, although the (French?) young maitre has an air of arrogance that needs seeing to.

The meal was very good but we won't be going back after all, as it is too high a price to pay.

everything was beautiful, relaxed and fun

the size of the bill means it is a restaurant you can return to regularly and not just a special occasion destination. hard to fault and harder to beat

You really must go for lunch or dinner at Kitchen W8! Thank god someone has thought to open a casual yet smart restaurant in Holland Park.

I arranged to have lunch with an old friend and decided to try the new Kitchen W8 - what a wonderful afternoon we had! The space is relaxed and elegant, similar in feel to Sonny's in Barnes. The staff were welcoming and helpful. We both loved our foie gras mousse starter - I can only describe it as heavenly decadence in a dish, it was so light and rich and very generous in portion size. Our charming waiter was quick to replenish our supply of the most delicious dark bread with dried fruit toast.

My friend loved her pan fried seabass. I'm afraid I can't remember what it came with because I was greedily tucking into my own food. I had roasted breast of duck with an endive tarte and I highly recommend it! It was beautifully presented and even better went eaten - I found myself trying to mop up every bit of rich duck glaze with my light, crunchy endive pastry, and was very happy. We laughed and ate and talked. The staff were very attentive, the food was beautiful and delicious and we had a really lovely lunch.

Very full that we resisted desert - but had coffee and delicious hand rolled chocolates, which I found perfect because I love a hint of salt and nuts as well as the little irregular shapes rolled in cocoa powder.

My friend's husband works down the road (Evening Standard) and she thought this is the perfect venue for working lunch and dinners. I see it more as a ladies' lunch spot :) I don't see why I can't be both and more. Thank you for a lovely lovely afternoon!

I love to dine out and when I heard about Kitchen W8 my friend and I went to test it out! I had the Froi Grois Mouse and to follow the Ox Tounge. The mouse was just perfect and it was a brave choice on the Ox Tong as I had never eaten it before. I made a great choice. It was delicious. My friend had the Bresola (not sure on spelling) and then to follow the Pork. The Pork was cooked to perfection and just melted in the mouth. We decided to have the Pinot Grigio blush which went well with all the dishes and was an excellent recommendation. We shared a chocolate Brownie with Hazelnut Ice cream which was pure sin on a plate and every mouthful was luxurious.

The décor is sophisticated yet casual and a very relaxing atmosphere. The staff were efficient and friendly. I would strongly recommend you try it. I have already booked my second visit.

We were very glad that Kitchen W8 didn't send us away although we didn't make a reservation that evening, and we were even more glad about the warm smoked eel salad with went superb with the Chablis (which was quite fruity when drank on its own, but developed its fine aroma along with the salad!).

At the end we were positively surprised about the good choices of cheese (from Roquefort to Reblonchon and St. Felicien) which were all at the right point to be tasted.

Except than the service which was rushing us a bit through the whole dinner, we highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely go back for more!

Londonelicious

Thursday, December 10, 2009 - The Little Freebies: Cod-y fried puffs of deliciousness. I could have had more of these. Really. Delicious!...Craig and I had the special of the day...the venison. And you know what? I thought it was pretty gorgeous. It turned out to be smoked venison and the two of us kept looking at each other, saying, 'This is really nice, this smokiness.' This was served on a bed of spinach which was neither here nor there...not bad, but not oustandingly good. Just nice. Really, the venison was pretty super.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 8/10

Monday, November 16, 2009 - The premise for Kitchen W8 is simple - a neighbourhood restaurant that serves good 'modern English style food with a French soul' at decent prices...My starter was a squid ink ravioli filled with crab and red mullet, topped with cuttlefish and octopus and finished with a lemon sauce. The seafood was fresh, sweet and delicious, and the ravioli was generously filled with a decent sized portion of crab and mullet. The lemon sauce was light and buttery and not overly lemon-ly. There was lots of lovely flavour in this dish.

Friday, November 13, 2009 - BK loved his halibut fillet - currently the most popular dish on the menu, according to the Bloomberg review. The fish was firm without being overcooked, and I loved the crispness, sharpness and stink of the Beaufort crust. Much-needed moisture came from a bed of sweet reduced onions and a few chanterelles...It's true that none of the dishes caused fireworks, but I'm a fan of Kitchen W8's ability to churn out crowd-pleasing dishes that are well executed. The portions are generous, the room is casual-elegant and welcoming, and the staff were friendly.
