what the critics say

The Independent

John Walsh - 12/15

Saturday, February 27, 2010 - My thinly sliced smoked eel with grilled mackerel, leek hearts and sweet mustard didn't reek of Gallic endeavour either. It was laid out in a rectangle of orange, white and brown, as pretty as an English watercolour, the eel shaved so wafer-thin it melted on my fork, the tiny bits of fish beautifully grilled. It was, in fact, so ethereal, it hardly counted as food at all...What they've brought to my professional backyard is a little too pricey and plain to be a neighbourhood drop-in site. But the food and the welcome make it a must-consider for anyone in Kensington with something to celebrate.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 4/5

Wednesday, January 13, 2010 - Excess is celebrated, whether it's a pastry crust and layer of sultry gelee round pork and rabbit terrine (plus kilner jar of headily spiced chutney and sourdough toast); deep-fried risotto arancini amuses; or the stunningly good salted caramel truffles. Sauces are hefty in flavour, enthusiastically reduced and boosted with cream and butter. Roast Icelandic cod on its bed of lentils laced with shards of Savoy cabbage seems positively blameless...Turning down the rich factor a couple of notches is all it would take to make this baby an unreservedly welcome new arrival.

Went here for midweek lunch recently and had the fixed price lunch (3 courses for just under £20).

We were very impressed with the food - usually when there is set meal the ingredients are of lesser quality but not here. The atmosphere is very pleasant and the service was top not obtrusive but there when you need them.

We will be going back!

I'd read good reviews about this place so i thought i'd take my mum there. We did not receive a very warm welcome by the girl at the front desk. We were just a few minutes early and she obviously wasnt happy to accommodate us, even though we were happy to just sit in the corner for a moment. The rest of the staff were very friendly. The food tasted nice but the portions were miniscule. I would have expected much more for the price. There was no music, no atmosphere and the £7.90 service charge was automatically added to the bill. Whilst i am more than happy to leave a tip, i understand that it is discretionary, not compulsory. I wont be going there again.

Went for the excellent value Sunday Lunch, £25 for 3 courses and the food and service was top quality.

The ambience was relaxed but professional.

Would highly recommend!

It was our second visit my husband and I.

Our first was OK.,although pricey, but since we live close by, we gave it an other try. It will be our last, it just confirmed what we felt at our previous visit. The welcome was quite abrupt at best, understandable if it was very busy but it was not, judging by the staff giggling near the bar.

The food was not in proportion of the Chef's reputation and that is where it is disappointing, but the prices are, obviously a balance not carefully managed.

The attitude of the staff is quite amazing but not in a good way, you would expect that in French restaurant some would say, yes may be 20 years ago, nowadays we expect care, kindness, smiles, that too was disappointing.

it is a shame though, the restaurant looks nice, the location is great but definitely not worth the money, especially when they ask a lot of it.

Second visit today since the rebrand, on a quiet Saturday lunch- so quiet initially in fact that we asked why, hoping that their other trading was going better, which I'm pleased to say it is and indeed the restaurant was busier rather later . We had a really good meal today, served by pleasant and efficient people who have their timings pretty much spot on.

Our first course was an excellent butternut squash veloute poured over tihy tortellini of wild duck. Mains were a tasty large ravioli of veal with wild mushrooms on a bed of spinach and topped with slices of roast veal rump. Dessert was a delicate caramelised tart of creme fraiche served with a beautiful lemon curd ice cream. So three winners we thought and for a set lunch price of £19.50 there can't be any complaints about value. Good bread and coffee too, and a selection of their wines are available by the 250ml carafe at prices comparable with full bottle prices.

Frankly I've eaten in some Michelin starred restaurants in London recently that haven't turned out food as good as this. Apparently they're pretty full in the evenings so advance booking is necessary, and on this form quite right too.

Booked a table via their website mid-October for Sunday dinner. The location was abit strange but once in the front door was like in a different place all together. Love the decor, quiet understated and very cosy. The food was amazing, staff attentive, nothing to complain about. All in all looking forward for the next time I can dine here. They have fixed price menus during the week at very low prices, a bargain.

Had wanted to eat in the Square for a long time but for what ever reason was never able to, so when a friend wanted to meet for lunch near South Ken, we thought we would give it's little sister a go.

The place looks great with well spaced tables and a relaxed cool vibe.

Service was very good with that nice balance betweenfun and formal. Extra praise goes to the manager who looked after us very well all afternoon.

Onto the food, first off the breads were okay but had much better elsewhere. However once the starters arrived things really took off. My chicken raviolio was rich and full of flavour and friends sardines were equally good. Mains were just as good with my belly of Veal being of a really high standard. We washed this down with a couple of bottles of white Burgundy from a decent sized wine list at a decent (ish) price.

We finished off with a couple glasses of red to go with our cheese, which although was not a great choice, was well kept and of a good size.

As for value for money goes it was not bad, with starters under £10, mains around £16 and wine from £15 a bottle. They also had a set menu with 3 courses for about £20 - great value for that level of cooking.

If I lived near I would be here once a week !!

had a meal at the kitchen a month ago that was very good - and nice atmosphere. I think there is a link to Sonnys in Barnes - which is a really good restaurant - good food, nice people and RELIABLE. Also perhaps to The Phoenix in Putney - that used to be good but has gone off lately and is currently closed.

My meal last night at the Kitchen was DREADFUL. Salad starter was very ordinary and my pork had a miniscule amount of meat on the three tiny fatty and crunchy - Ugh - slivers. Politely said to waitress that the food was quite disappointing and the reply was everyone has their own taste - which I found really annoying - so asked her to let the chef know I was really disappointed in the food - which she obviously didn't do. When leaving I pointed out to the lady at the counter that the meal was very disappointing and the reply was " that pork dish is new - 2 weeks old - and people seem to like it".

When there is such arrogance in a business that your views as someone who has paid reasonable money ( my bill £137-25 last night) count for nothing then I feel they are heading downhill. Am not likely to go back there ever.

First visit since the revamp, and the big difference was that you used to eat there virtually alone on a Saturday lunchtime, whereas now it was all I could do to get a table the day before .

We liked 11 Abingdon road, just as we like its sister resaurant, Sonny's in Barnes. Frankly the food we had yesterday wasn't so different , and remains good value. The place doesn't look so different either. But then, as I say, we liked it before. Nice to see wines by the glass being sold at prices near those of the bottles, which meant we could tie wines to food rather than just ordering a bottle for the two of us.

My wife suggests I make particular mention of her salmon in a beetroot? foam from yesterday's set menu. The colour combination of pale orange and bright pink looked pretty bizarre, but she did think that it tasted very good indeed. I was a bit spoiled for choice on the main menu so I guess another trip's on the cards.

A restaurant 50 yards from Ken. High Street, serving very decent food and good value for money should have always been busy. It seems to have taken a relaunch and the involvement of new part owners to actually achieve what they've always deserved.

We went to Kitchen W8 for dinner on Wednesday 13 January. It was the best meal we have had for a long time. The service was excellent - our waiter preempted our every wish; the atmosphere was spot on; and the food and wine were exquisite - in particular the coq au vin and my partner's steak followed by the rice pudding and molten chocolate pudding were all cooked to perfection. We will definitely be returning soon!

Londonelicious

Londonelicious

Thursday, December 10, 2009 - The Little Freebies: Cod-y fried puffs of deliciousness. I could have had more of these. Really. Delicious!...Craig and I had the special of the day...the venison. And you know what? I thought it was pretty gorgeous. It turned out to be smoked venison and the two of us kept looking at each other, saying, 'This is really nice, this smokiness.' This was served on a bed of spinach which was neither here nor there...not bad, but not oustandingly good. Just nice. Really, the venison was pretty super.

A Girl Has To Eat

A Girl Has To Eat - 8/10

Monday, November 16, 2009 - The premise for Kitchen W8 is simple - a neighbourhood restaurant that serves good 'modern English style food with a French soul' at decent prices...My starter was a squid ink ravioli filled with crab and red mullet, topped with cuttlefish and octopus and finished with a lemon sauce. The seafood was fresh, sweet and delicious, and the ravioli was generously filled with a decent sized portion of crab and mullet. The lemon sauce was light and buttery and not overly lemon-ly. There was lots of lovely flavour in this dish.

An American In London

Friday, November 13, 2009 - BK loved his halibut fillet - currently the most popular dish on the menu, according to the Bloomberg review. The fish was firm without being overcooked, and I loved the crispness, sharpness and stink of the Beaufort crust. Much-needed moisture came from a bed of sweet reduced onions and a few chanterelles...It's true that none of the dishes caused fireworks, but I'm a fan of Kitchen W8's ability to churn out crowd-pleasing dishes that are well executed. The portions are generous, the room is casual-elegant and welcoming, and the staff were friendly.
