Saturday, July 17, 2010 - The menu at Aqua Nueva has an excellent pedigree, having been designed by Alberto Hernandez, a former chef at el Bulli, and it has plenty to recommend it: crab ravioli with grilled cuttlefish, Castilian roast lamb, poached egg with pancetta, lobster with chickpeas and crispy pork, roast foie gras...The skyline is one of the most romantic sights in the world, and on a warm summer's evening you can sit on the terrace with a glass of pretty good Albarino, nibbling at the tapas collection (goat's cheese wrapped in spinach, langoustine carpaccio, grilled octopus, blood sausage and Iberian ham croquettes).
Sunday, October 18, 2009 - Aqua Nueva is a restaurant from a different era - the era that ended a year ago when Arctic winds suddenly blew through the City. Recession? What recession?...A couple of the things we ate were impressive. They hand-cut their ham very well and serve it at the right temperature...A tranche of sea bass, accurately cooked, was booted from one side of the plate to the other by an overly salty broth. Across the top lay a thin, transparent flap of jelly, a redundant modernist touch which brought nothing to the dish.
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 - Aqua Nueva is spacious, comfortable, attractively lit and decorated with woodturner's offcuts turned into hanging screens. One side is designated a 'tapas bar', and serves a fairly conventional list of tiny dishes. The dining room proper has a more adventurous menu...A fillet of hake was nicely cooked and topped with some chewy bits of squid, but the 'salsa verde' described on the menu was as clear and salty as seawater. Oxtail was the best dish, a neat block of the flesh marinated then slow-cooked, simply served with some nouvelle-style carved vegetables. But our dessert was a car crash of flavours...
Thursday, October 01, 2009 - Baby squid with squid ink and a broth poured from a dinky little white porcelain jug was sweet and gentle. Roasted foie gras with mango, melon and black tea sauce would have been much more agreeable had it been served hot and crisp from its searing rather than tepid and mushy...Main courses were all meaty; 24-hour marinated and braised oxtail, roasted Iberian neck of pork with mixed peppercorn sauce and partridge Alcantara style. A sticky, dark, over-reduced sauce covering meat cooked too long was a common factor in all three dishes.
Went Saturday night and had a fabulous time!! Stunning interior, really cool vibe. Bartender was great, and treated us to a couple of totally unique champagne cocktails before dinner. Great bread options, fabulous, friendly service. Decadent appetizer (the scallops) and dessert. Very good wine- all at reasonable prices-not too over the top, so refreshing for such a good restaurant in London! Will definitely be back, and also look forward to trying the Japanese side. Aqua Nueva
Went to Aqua Nueva last night for the first time. Very impressed with entrance and service staff - up until we actually sat down and wanted to eat. They were slow with service, spilt a glass of wine on the table, we had to ask 3 times for bread, when asked to describe one of their signature dishes, the answer was simply: "its very good...its meat".. Menu is in spanish but if you order something by its spanish name, the waiter asks you to repeat it in english!
A real pity as the food was very good! I had some excellent foie gras, followed by beatifully cooked deer in berry and red wine sauce.

Aqua Nueva
I went to this new place for dinner during its first week of opening, and it's well worth a visit. The location is right opposite the Palladium, close to Oxford Circus tube, so it's easy to find. But what I liked most was the stunning walkway into the restaurant. You really feel like you've found somewhere special. The large outdoor terrace has great views and is a nice place to unwind and chill, and the food is refreshingly different. The staff were attentive, and knew their job well. The bill came to just over 80 pounds for two of us, including wine, which I thought was decent value for central London. I'll definitely be back to try the Japanese restaurant on the same site. Monday, September 27, 2010 - Confused by the use of the word 'tapas' to describe the starters, we had over-ordered on savoury courses and so had to skip dessert, but I still didn't feel, despite the relatively disappointing mains, that we had suffered a bad meal. The worst I can say about Aqua Nueva is that its priorities aren't quite in alignment with my own, but there must be room in London for a bit of sparkle and razzmatazz, as long as the food isn't a complete disaster zone. It's a bit pricey, it's a bit superficial, and it's a bit showy, but the Movida-set hanging around on the rooftop terrace seemed to be enjoying themselves.
Tuesday, October 06, 2009 - The food? Well, in parts, it was better than I expected but nowhere near as good as I hoped, especially at these prices. Everything just needed a lot more care...Jamon is a good test of any place serving Spanish Food. It's deceptively difficult to get right. Here, the ham was of good quality and was cut thinly but the presentation was lacking, there was not enough fat and a surfeit of dry pieces. Not really what you expect for 18 quid. Croquetas - another benchmark - were nicely cooked, the bechamel was a bit runnier than I like it and you had to hunt for the nuggets of ham but not a bad effort.
