When our rice fell apart in the soy sauce, we complained to the manager, who started arguing with us, that we were not dipping it correctly. The manager who obviously had zero training in restaurant service, kept coming over to our table to do the waiter tasks, but he did everything wrong, (didn't tilt the beer glass when filling it, it was all foam, as he was reaching over his sleeve dipped into our food, and I could go on and on.) He was an extremely annoying busybody who totally ruined our dinner experience.

Aside from the rice falling apart, the fish was fairly decent.

Will not go back.

Great food but on an expense account.

Service was also extremely attentive, perhaps because my Japanese colleagues are regulars there and you definitely don't want to annoy those clients.

Atmosphere was the standard quiet eatery and was relaxed. Definitely did not have an ambiance liked Defune, but it bodes well for eating and good company.

I had lunch at the sushi counter and ordered a sashimi on rice. The food was average, the portion small and the price very high. With a green tea the bill came to £14.45. Avoid this place as it is very expensive and poor value. And if you speak to the owner he gives free insults on request.

This is one of the best Japanese 'tapas' style restaurants in London. The food is excellent and the service is very efficient, as you'd expect. They also have wonderful selection of sake. Best to book in the evenings, but lunchtimes are good to drop in.

Favourite eaterie of the glamourous West End crowd - try the hourensou salad (baby spinach and spicy prawns) with a spider maki roll (deep fried soft shell crab rolled inside out) which with a green tea and service roughly works out at £20. 'Chisou to go' next door is also brilliant if you don't have the time to sit down. You can buy their delicious Yuzu vinaigrette from the counter but it would take the patience of an angel to re-create the masterpieces that the chefs make - painstakingly arranging a fan of a hundred baby spinach leaves takes dedication. A restaurant that is utterly deserving of the good reviews that it has receieved.

never really liked sushi until I found this place two years ago.

I took my boss's advise on simple tuna. (says gotta try fresh tuna to like sushi)

it was absolutely fresh and I fell in love. now I became expert in sushi trying almost every japanese cuisine in the city. I would say chisou is the best in general without any hesitation throughout fresh food, taste, service.

wish they bring the price little lower so I can go more often but still I find their food value for what i spend.

I hate vegetables but I'm addicted to their spinach salad.

Consistently very very good. I've eaten lunch here nearly a dozen times and have never been disappointed by anything they produce. The sushi is the best I've had in Mayfair. Their service has always been flawless. Those writing disappointed reviews below either encountered the place on a rare off day or have skewed expectations.

EXCELLENT RESTAURANT !!

I've been trying Chisou Restaurant in years by Lunch and Dinner.

I work right by Oxford Circus so its really convenient for me to bring my buyers to Chisou. its not a cheap restaurant, I agree... But I had never regret bringing my friends, family or my important buyers to chisou because their food and service deserves to be paid at that cost. Now, my buyers asks me to make a reservation at Chisou prior to their visit. One of my buyer said chisou food was actually better than what he had in Tokyo business trip.. so its not my choice anymore... :)

one more thing... I often see famous celebrities coming to Chisou when I'm there having dinner. I can see why they come to Chisou. Great Food is a MUST of course! but more importantly, employees treat everybody equally the same.

Their service makes me feel like I'm just as important customer as celebrity on every visit !

Paid Chisou a visit on the basis of the strength of the old reviews, and its rather pretty website; I'd noticed the newer, more critical comments but optimistically decided to disregard them.

Regrettable choice, as it turns out. Went at lunch and ordered chirashizushi. You could tell the fish might have been of better quality at some point in the past, but both the salmon and tuna were a disconcerting pale colour (two small slices of each) and the (one) ebi had that distinct, mushy mouthfeel that might be desirable in... peanut butter? But definitely not in ebi.

In addition to that we had three slices of octopus, two half-sticks of crabstick and a half-bowl of rice. Price was comparable to most other upper-scale places in the area (Mitsukoshi, Sakura) but for this kind of food-court fare, I'm not sure I'd have been worth it even at half price.

Not normally picky about service, but it was rushed (though the place was barely 1/3 full, even at 1pm - which says a lot too, I think, given the location) and unexpectedly rude. Atmosphere was acceptable, but that was about the only good aspect of the visit.

In any case, I will probably never, ever be coming here again - I wouldn't say "worst", but certainly the most lifeless and pathetic restaurant experiences I've had this year.

Bellaphon

Monday, June 15, 2009 - Chisou is located within the nightmarish environs of Oxford Circus but thankfully it is also an ideal place to regain a bit of sanity back from the madding crowd of shoppers...If honesty prevails, Chisou may not give either Dinings or Cafe Japan (Golders Green) sleepless nights but it is still good enough to be tagged as a place offering good and honest traditional Japanese food. It has never failed us and we can only return the compliments by going back for more lunches as often as we can.
