what the critics say

Times Online

Giles Coren - 7/10

Saturday, April 17, 2010 - We had ham croquetas, pimientos de Padron (not salty enough), fried artichokes, sauteed sweetbreads with beans, a really good escalivada (which is piles of grilled strips of red pepper and aubergine and onions in oil), and then some exceptionally good, rich veal cheeks braised in pedro ximenez, that dark, treacly sherry in which you could really taste the treacliness, and then plates of cheese, manchego and garrotxa, with glasses of oloroso. You know, I think Barrica is maybe something to write home about, after all.

Metro

Marina O'Loughlin - 3/5

Wednesday, January 20, 2010 - There are 20-odd sherries - we have the rare and lovely palo cortado - and a vast selection of wines from the length of Spain. The 'plato del dia' is Asturia's beloved bean and pork fest, fabada, here translated as a sort of floury sub-cassoulet with entirely the wrong beans. The quality of the cured meats is good - paprika-rich sobrasada, acorn-fed Iberico jamon - but portions are weeny...Barrica is beautifully laid-back, welcoming you for simply beer and salted almonds or a full blowout. I'm coming back.

We booked a table for four online a few days in advance and arrived on time at 6.30pm on 20 December. It was therefore disappointing to be shown to a high table for eight right inside the doorway which already contained four people who had sprawled out. Although they offered to move up, we didn’t feel well treated by the waitress particularly when there were lots of empty tables at the back of the restaurant. The manager was too busy chatting to deal with our complaint and so we walked out. Instead we went to Istanbul Mezze Bar in nearby Cleveland Street, where we were delighted to find staff who appreciated our custom.

A friend recommended Barrica last year and this must have been the fourth or fifth time we've been back. Love the atmosphere! Really relaxed, great selection of tapas (recommend ordering off the specials) and a great wine list. Service is friendly and informal... just what we like!

Awesome place. Relaxed and friendly service. Great selection of wine and sherry (darn it, sherry is good). Daily changing menu of tasty tapas. Great full-flavoured dishes, a match for any other bar/restaurant of it's kind in London...and I've been to a lot. Can't really fault it.

Good food, poor service. Decent selection of daily tapas and a few standards. We were informed before hand that the table seating period was for 2 hours. However there is an unpleasant paradox in encouraging diners to have more wine and food only to bluntly tell them with tapas still on the table that the seating period was over and you would now need to leave. Given price its a bit much, but then again it seems that the way of the world today. Whilst the interior is simple and elegant, a number of attendees were more interested in coming in for a drink than the food which means that unless you are seated at the back at proper tables the din of noise and crowd pushing onto you as you eat to the side is rather unpleasant. Again the food is quite good, if unexceptional for the prices demanded and those seeking a more pleasant atmosphere are better served to attend the Salt Yard next door (though the service is also fairly if not very poor).

The food was excellent, likewise the sherries, but this is an expensive night out and the portions are meagre. I think the staff who are described in some reviews as "friendly and helpful" must have left/been on holiday/been having a bad day. They didn't have the first idea about what the dishes were which they brought to our table (the lamb sweetmeats were presented as chicken, as was the quail) and any request for guidance about the different sorts of sherries brought looks of blank incomprehension bordering on indifference (rather along the lines of "never touch the stuff myself"). Their main priority was to get us out of there so others could use the table, judging by the speed with which they whisked away glasses and plates which were not yet empty and which we had to retrieve. Don't arrive hungry and don't go mad on the sherries; the prices soon ratchet up and it can be very expensive.

Had a great time at this relaxed fun tapas joint. We ordered from the specials of the day and were surprised by the quality of cooking. Service with a smile and not too formal...just right for a tapas bar. Would recommend it to anyone, especially if they like the hustle and bustle.

I felt the need to leave a review of this fantastic little tapas bar.

I was there with my partner and his sister this Saturday and was greeted by a very friendly member of staff and our waitress was delightful.

The quality of the food has to be sampled to be believed . So yummy! The portions were exactly what you would expect from a tapas bar/restaurant. I guess you would need to go to Spain to know what an authentic tapas bar is all about.

We opted for beer and not wine. That may have kept the cost down. But we thought It was good value for money. And this tapas bar is as close to an authentic tapas bar in London as I know.

I would recommend this place , but it did get busy as we were leaving, so i think I would book.

Go to Barrica if you want to sample a taste of Spain in the west end!

Food is good but portions are really small and in the end, the bill is expensive. Service is allright but we made a reservation for 3, and even with that, they didn't have enough tables and had to eat in a table made for 2 people...

Wine was really nice. Croquetas and ham are the best, the rest is fine. I am sure you can find another tapas restaurant in London with better price, more quantities and nearly the same food quality.

Disappointing. Saturday night and full - but there did not seem enough staff to cope. The food was ok but not nearly as good as Salt Yard next door and really pricey too. Too many other excellent places nearby to go back here again...

Well, the food is not too bad (though a lot worse than places half the price) and I suppose its central London but really we spent £120 for three people with a bottle of wine and left hungry and feeling very ripped off. We won't be going back. Do not have the jamon: its poor quality and the portion is so small you could inhale it. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Monday, January 25, 2010 - Let me skip right to the punch. My food at Barrica was good. But my experience with their service was pretty terrible...It was Spanish. I like ham. But the croquetas were anemic looking. Tiny. Miserable. And the patatas bravas were just so gunky...Time went by. Still no wine. At this point, the food was gone and we don't want the wine anymore. That's just not acceptable.

Monday, December 14, 2009 - The first impressions were good. The omelette (tortilla) was cut into bite-size rhombuses, and they were mushy potato rich and well seasoned, appetitising. We noted the paltry croquetas portions, but were roundly impressed (well I was anyway) with the warmth of the creamy centre...The crabs on toast were pretty good and a little different from the British recipes which I am used to. The citrus zing was clearly missing, and in it's place a subdued fishiness lingered on my buds.

Dos Hermanos

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 - There is an extensive wine list and a wide selection of pretty standard tapas. I chose two dishes by which the intentions and abilities of any Spanish restaurant can be discerned. More croquetta of Jamon were tiny and had been cooked for too long on the outside. The insides, however, were good, creamy and flecked with decent amounts of jamon...The ham at Barrica had been cut by machine. Although the fat began to melt to a lovely sheen, as it should, it was not enough to disguise the fact that the meat had begun to dry out and lose the delicate flavour of acorns for which it is so famous.
